Subject: unusual object
Hi,
I'm in Olympia WA. At approx 10:32pm (6/5/07) pacific local time i
observed a bright object moving from the SSW horizon up towards the NE, max
altitude was about 60-70 degrees or so. It was almost as bright as Venus.
At first i thought it was an airplane, but it was a steady bright light,
even as it passed over and i was watching it recede. I checked Heavens
Above - not a listed satelite. The transit time was about 2 minutes or so.
I've been out almost every night and seen hundreds of airplanes and dozens
of visible satellites, even an iridium flare or 3, but I've never seen
anything like this. My best guess is it was either a very low satellite or
an asteroid.
Can anyone shed any light om this?
Thanks
Eric

Eric,

I will be on vacation this coming week from June 11 through June 19
and would be more than happy to collimate your scope. Here is the
best and safest way to get contact information for me. . .or to pass
yours along to myself.

Go to: www.moderatedsciastroamateur.org
Register once there (it is free) and then you can view the member
list.
Click on my name from the member list and then look for the following
at the bottom: Send this member a personal message.

Private conversation can then commence.

Hope to hear from you,

Martin R. Howell

Hi Eric,

I live in Olympia, too and saw the exact same thing on the night
before only a bit earlier. Perhaps it was around 9:30 pm. My only
thoughts were that it had something to do with the two military
installations just north of us but who knows? It was quite a site.

Hey Martin,
How good are you at collimation? I've got a 12" dob that i cant seem to get
a good collimation on.
