Subject: trouble with Cartes du Ciel version 3.0.1.2 beta
|
Just downloaded and installed Cartes du Ciel version 3.0.1.2 beta along with the catalog. I can't get anything to appear on the charts other than the brightest stars and planets. I've tried adjusting the configuration and clicked on and off the menu at the top, but I can't get anything else to appear. Any ideas? Thanks, Art

I wasn't installing the base catalog, figuring the program itself already had a built-in catalog. I don't recall the earlier version I had having a separate install for a catalog, but it's been so long ago that I forget. Anyway, thanks, a big help in the right direction and I already see the DSOs as FIT images since I downloaded that before. Thanks again, Art

Thanks for this thread. Just downloaded about 100mb of stuff. Can't seem to get the program to talk to the catalogs. Where are the cataglogs suppose to be? In Program Files\Ciel or somewhere else. Can't find much documetation...and I ain't gonna join Yahoo, maybe I'm SOL? Thanks in advance for any pointers. Each one in zip format has to be unzipped to your Ciel directory. Install the Ceil program first and then unzip the required base catalog to the Ciel folder. The base catalog seems to be the only one required. I too downloaded all of the other catalogs and unzipped them to the Ciel folder. You'll need to enable the catalog or catalogs you want to use in the Ciel configuration. Honestly, I'm finding that the additional catalogs interfere with one another if all enabled at once so I guess its best to enable only one or two at a time. If starting over again, I would have just downloaded the required base catalog and the pictures from the 3rd category down on the website. You can just double click on the pictures exe file and it will auto install. Neat to be able to see nearly 10,000 DSOs in FITS format, and right on the chart to boot. Good luck, Art

Art: Thanks, been able to get bsc and tycho2 to work together. That's cool as I'm used to the Greek for the constellation stars. No galaxies or nebula yet, have to keep fooling with it I guess. I'm an H-B fan all the way, love that atlas. Can't see this ever replacing it for DSO's, but it is nice for solar system stuff. Thanks! Rod, Thanks for your reply. When you say the "complete package", are you referring to the five files listed under it? I downloaded only the Win exe file along with the first catalog, so maybe I didn't download enough. I don't know Cartes du Ciel myself, but I know several other frequent posters do use it, so help is probably on the way; in the meantime there are at least two Yahoo groups dedicates to the software: "skychart-discussion" "skychart"
