You've got balls, then .. accidentally line up the
sun and it's game over for your retina

Not hard to line up on when it is visible to the naked eye. Besides,
the day I looked at Venus through the telescope in the daytime sky, it
had just been occulted by the moon, so no problem finding it.

I remember as a kid lying on my back on the lawn and looking at the
clear blue sky and seeing white dots. You can see the brightest stars
and planets in daylight if you look in the right place. I picked out
Venus in a small telescope before midday once and it looked like a
small crescent moon. I showed the postie who was passing and she
thought it was the moon.

For anyone curious, Jupiter is the bright 'star' just under Scorpio.
Scorpio is fairly easy to spot, it is just east of the Southern Cross. The
constellation of Scorpio is three stars at the front, marking the pincers
and head, three stars marking the body (the middle of which is the red
supergiant) and a long curling tail.
