Subject: eyepiece/ diagonal adaptor for Canon EOS (EF) lenses ???
Hi everyone,

I am looking for an adaptor to be able to attach a diagonal (or just
an eyepiece) to a Canon EF lens, for visual use. Is there such an
animal???

Why not make one?

It's going to be pretty stubby - camera lenses have, by
telescope standards, very little back focus. They don't
need much, since the focal plane is set by where the
film/CCD is in the camera. I just tried holding eyepieces
up to a couple of lenses, and while they reach infinity
focus, there is only a centimeter or two to spare. A diagonal
isn't going to be part of the picture...

What application did you have in mind?

Thanks Laura - I had a feeling that there was not going to be enough
room! Oh well, I'll just use my T-ring and adapter and see how I go.

I wanted to use my 300mm f/2.8 lens as a telescope, so that I don't
have to lug a telescope along as well as my photo gear when out
camping. Just an idea to make the most out of the gear I have... :-)

Here's where someone made such a gadget using a rear lens cap and an
eyepiece holder:

I know for sure Nikon used to sell an eyepiece for their lenses, but I
can't recall seeing a commercial model for EOS lenses.

Thanks for that, Bud. Will check it out.

You need a T-ring and a 2" (or 1.25") adapter.

The T-ring is EOS specific, while the 2" adapter is generic. The T-
ring fits the EOS bayonette and the other end is threaded to a
standard thread that all adapters are similarly threaded. I can't
recall where I got my T-ring, but my adapter came from AstroPhysics.

With these two parts, you camera becomes another eyepiece to the
telescope (which you have to rebalance for the weight of the camera).

I already have both of those, so will see how they go once my lens
arrives. I thought there might be some other, more elegant solution,
but since there is so little back-focus available, I should have known
better. Thanks for you help, anyway. :-)
