At least it would remove that "usenet-wide" crap that hits here from time to
time. Maybe requiring a certain header string "[SAA]" as part of the
subject, or some such thing would reduce the crap count
Just my thoughts

Naw...it wouldn't. s.a.a. is what it is. That can be good, and that can
be bad, but that's s.a.a.; if you want moderation, there are TONS of
astro-related Yahoogroups.

Yes, it wouldn't be nice if the newsgroup was moderated (IMHO).

I'm not sure I'd like the group to be moderated by someone who would want to
moderate it.

How about we elect Nancy of Planet X fame as the moderator???

I x'd out that name as I don't want to ever post it, she's even gone from
alt.astronomy and I am glad of that. There's enough kooks around without
her.

I agree. I second the nomination for Nancy Leider for moderator of this
newsgroup. Danny Joe Min could also be co-moderator. There will be more
laughs than the Comedy Club and Laugh Factory combined!

Agreed, you'll end up with the types who want to be H.O.A. presidents
warring against peace signs. :-p

The problem with moderation is that it would take a day for someone to
reply to a post, and then another day to reply to the reply. At least.

Also, the moderator would be legally responsible for everything in the
group, and so no frank discussion of products sold to amateur
astronomers would be possible.

Hint. Find out how Usenet works, and then realise that this group
_can't_be moderated. This group would have to stop, and a new moderated
group would have to be formed....

Best Wishes

I don't think it would be worth it.

The signal to noise ratio is aceptable, it is much worse in other NGs I
drop in on.

If it's a better way to go you are looking for create/join an email
list.

Moderated groups are not necessarily all that great, either. Have you
ever looked at "cloudynights.com"? Every person that posts a message
there lists what sort of astronomical equipment they own at the end of
each message, e.g.:

Jack Dweeb
25.0" Starmonger w/enhanced barium coatings
6" OverPriced Refractor

What a bunch of snobs. Like anybody gives a flip. That alone was enough
to keep me from signing up for an account.

Nah, *nobody* really believes that.

Even the most die-hard von Daniken followers knew that Battlestar
Galactica was just a TV show.
