Hi:

I seem to be recommending this scope every single day, I know, but
IMHO, it's _that_ good.

Get the Orion StarBlast at <http://www.telescope.com >

If it's made in the USA and has anything to do with
astronomy, it must be excellent.

What?! You're a trusting soul. ;-)

At any rate, this is a Synta.
As are most of Orion's scopes.

Hi Gale,
Drop by the George Observatory located in Brazos Bend State Park one
Saturday evening, and you can lay hands on a number of different scopes and
talk with knowledgeable users. (p.s. ask how to become an observatory
volunteer and then you and your grandson can use any of the scopes they own
including the big scopes in the domes!). Texas Nautical Repair on Richmond
is a nice store to stop by. Also, there are several astronomy clubs around
Houston that can offer good advice, used equipment for sale, and free loaner
scopes. This site will link you to them:

Peace,

I'll add another recommendation for the Orion StarBlast -- available
at http://www.oriontelescopes.com.

Unlike some telescopes marketed toward beginners, those available from
Orion tend to be practical and will actually function in the hands of
a beginner.

I have personal experience dealing with a poorly made beginner's
telescope that was purchased by a grandparent for one of their
grandchildren. The telescope was a refractor that did not have enough
focusing range to focus with the star diagonal in place! This
telescope was also fitted with a poorly made mount. Once the
telescope was pointed at Jupiter, the point of aim shifted enough to
lose the planet from view when the telescope tube was released. These
are just some of the difficulties that *many* youngsters face with a
first telescope. It pays to do your research and purchase a telescope
that is actually useable!
