Subject: microscope binocular heads any good for telescopes?
|
Hello group: I have seen that it is possible to get cheap binocular heads for microscopes on eBay. Even the zeiss ones look quite cheap, compared to other ones. I was wondering whether it is possible to adapt them ,with some minimal work, to a telescope such as a newtonian or a shmidt cassegrain. I am sure somebody must have already tried this idea before. Thanks in advance

Hi: How cheap is "cheap"? You can get a binoviewer set up for a telescope for about 200US$ now, often with a couple of eyepieces. To use a binoviewer with a Newtonian you will, at the least, need to use a barlow with it. Otherwise you won't have sufficient focus travel. I don't know if it's worthwhile today with the proliferation of binoviewers retailing for ~$180. But a few years ago I built on (with help from dear old dad) out of a Nikon (Japan) bino head. There are pictures of it at http://tinyurl.com/yx4ddh. It's since been sold when I got a great deal on a Denk FMC.
