Subject: Tips for installing UCAC2 in Cartes du Ciel, AIP4WIN and MPO Canopus

For another newsgroup, I typed up some updated (9/20060 notes on installing the 3 CD USNO UCAC2 catalogue and then running the catalogue off the harddrive, instead of having to disk swap the 3 CDs. I'm posting the notes here for archival purposes, should any other beginners run across the same problem - Canopus56 =============== > > Is there a way to make AIP4WIN to use the UCAC2 3CD catalogue > > off the hard drive? [I] received a request to post the steps to run AIP4WIN v9.2.8 with the three UCAC2 catalogue CDs (Dec. 2003 verion) off the hard-drive instead of by disk-swapping. (This process does not include installing the 2004 update. Catalogue I/294 at Simbad CDS. I have not figured out how to add the 2004 update catalogue.) With the following setup, I can use ASCOM and Cartes du Ciel to GOTO drive my telescope to the field of interest, image and quickly check the measure the image field in AIP4WIN or MPO Canopus to assure a match. A) Getting the 3 UCAC2 CDs. The USNO is will issue CD copies on delayed basis. Per the USNO UCAC2 homepage: "We are out of UCAC2 CDs, all 1000 copies have been distributed. If you know someone who has an original copy, please contact that person. If not, we still accept requests and try to burn copies and send them out as before, it just might take longer." http://ad.usno.navy.mil/ucac/ With respect to the next UCAC release, the above page states "UCAC3: progress has been made in the software development and testing for the pixel re-reduction. However, the final catalog release is delayed until mid 2007." I emailed around to my local astronomy clubs and found a local member who had an original set of USNO CDs. B) Installing UCAC2 in AIP4WIN without having to swap CDs The directory described below also works for MPO Canopus: 1) Off the C:\ root make an aliased directory C:\UCAC2B\u2 (copy B of the UCAC2 catalogue) 2) On each of the 3 CDs is subdirectory u2. Copy directory <CD >\u2 => C:\UCAC2B\ overwriting all files in the directory C:\UCAC2B\u2 3) Do this for all three CDs. The file C:\UCAC2B\u2\u2index.da will be destructively overwritten. That's okay. 4) Launch AIP4WIN v9.2.8 and under menubar Preferences
