Subject: Time to clean house at the IAU?

Seems like only some younger astronomers are looking rationally at the planet issue while the "old guard" are buldozing ahead with their myopic, nostalgic and STUPID plan to turn everything but NASA's old space junk into planets. Ceres? Are they out of their F---- minds? Or is alzheimers an affliction of astronmers as much as the general population? This isn't what I thought would happen to the IAU. Watching the average age of amateurs climb over the years, I figured they'd just fade into relative obscurity, every so often naming a new Moon feature or asteroid. Perhaps the younger members would go on some politically-correct jag and start naming astronomical objects after African witch dors or Native American chiefs. What has happened is disturbing and I hope they control themselves so we don't up with hundreds of lumps of rock and ice being called planets. Talk about cheapening the term. To put it in perspective, try describing or naming all of Saturn's moons....

How do you know that only the older astronomers have put forth the new definition? Why assume that the same people who have defined ONLY 9 objects as planets would want to broaden the definition that far? Ceres? Are they out of their F---- minds? They didn't propose that Ceres be named a planet, others leaped to that conclusion. > Or is alzheimers an affliction of astronmers as much as the general > population? No, actually the incidence of alzheimers is far LESS in academics than in the general population. > This isn't what I thought would happen to the IAU. The younger generation is the more politically conservative, or haven't you been following events for the past 10 years? As for naming objects, why not Native American chiefs? Makes as much sense as obscure Greek deities. And why do they all have male names? > What has happened is disturbing and I hope they control themselves so > we don't up with hundreds of lumps of rock and ice being called > planets. Why do you leap to the conclusion that "hundreds" of objects will suddenly be named planets? The proposed definition is just that--PROPOSED. It was put into play for the purpose of discussion within the astronomical community and is far from being adapted. In any case, the functioning of science will not be affected one bit by a new definition. Bob, 63

That's great. However, if you read my message carefully, you'll see that I'm actually interested in the pronunciation of *Ganymede*, not Io. The Io pronunciation issue I've heard bandied about for 25 years. But I never hear anyone complain about Ganymede being pronounced GAN-uh-meed even though I'd guess that is not how it is pronounced in Greek. But I am just guessing--I'm curious as to how it's really pronounced. -- Brian Tung <brian@isi.edu > The Astronomy Corner at http://astro.isi.edu/ Unofficial C5+ Home Page at http://astro.isi.edu/c5plus/ The PleiadAtlas Home Page at http://astro.isi.edu/pleiadatlas/ My Own Personal FAQ (SAA) at http://astro.isi.edu/reference/faq.html

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Or 75 days, depending on your timezone and whether you observe the common "Midnight-to-Midnight" calendric convention, or the liturgical "Sundown-to-Sundown" observance, or the astronomical "Noon-to-Noon-UT" Julian Day calendar, or the more astrological "Noon-to-Noon-LAT" (sun at southing, local-angle "sundial" time) as commencing the solar day... IT IS IMPORTANT that every law-abiding patriotic American across America gets registered and *VOTES* Republican across-the-board for this mid-term election. The left-wing Liberal Atheist party (formerly known as "democrats") are, as it is written, going to *fail* abjectly to regain control of our Republican-controlled U.S. Congressional House of Representatives, -- much less our Republican-controlled United States Senate. The Liberals LOST! So every earthly Church, Synagogue, Mosque, Ashram, Organization, Company, Corporation, Business, Industry, Fraternity, Sorority, Society, Lodge, Club, Syndicate, Clique, Faction, Neighborhood, Classroom, University, Family, Race, Creed, Color, ad infinitum needs to actively and proactively encourage everyone eligible to vote to register then **GET OUT AND VOTE REPUBLICAN** November 7, 2006 anno Domini! So mark your calendars and spread the word: America cannot--must not--surrender to the Anti-American Anti-Christian Homosexuality Pedophilia Liberal Anarchist party (formerly known as democrats). Liberals *HATE* God, Family and Country, so we must *DESTROY* them just as we must destroy their partisan sympathizers, the genocidal Islamo-Fascist terrorists, and draconian dictatorships around the world (N. Korea, Cuba, Venezuela, etc.) who *HATE* Republicans and want to sell our children to rapists, homosexuals, pedophiles, and murderers. Thus the likelihood that radical left-wing Liberals and their terrorist friends will strike against American, Israeli, and other American-allied targets by or before these mid-term elections is approaching 100% certainty--as desperate men do desperate things, and the Liberals and their terrorist allies are extremely DESPERATE! So be sure to remind all your friends & associates to register and *VOTE* Republican across-the-board. And remind everyone to aggressively boycott Liberals on all fronts! DO NOT hire Liberals! DO NOT associate with them in any way, shape or form. NEVER give a Liberal a job or a raise. But if you must keep a Liberal on your payroll, be sure to always pass them over for promotion, and make their jobs so miserable that they'll quit anyway. :-D Fellow employees and employers can help tremendously with our nationwide goal to bankrupt the Liberals. It's not too difficult to find out who is a Liberal vs. who is not. Use the search engines to find out if they've left any "e-paper" trail. Or just casually strike up a conversation with them, and mention key buzzwords that elicit angry reactions from Liberals and their Islamo-Fascist terrorist allies... you know, popular Republican words and phrases like "God", "our LORD and Saviour Jesus Christ", "Bush", "Cheney", "America", "Israel", "Ann Coulter", "Bill O'Reilly", FOXNEWS etc. Once you've identified who the Liberals are, then carefully, quietly, do everything you can to *sabotage* their livelihood! Get the word out that they are Anti-American Liberal traitors, so more Republican-owned businesses can add them to our nationwide "DO NOT HIRE" blacklist. We shall destroy the Liberal enemy, but every God-fearing Republican in the U.S.A. must *actively* and *proactively* participate to make it happen! For starters, be sure to bookmark and peruse the following "Buy Blue" website. But of course, instead of "Buying Blue" as the inhuman Liberal diseases would like you to do, simply do the opposite, and boycott the "Bluest" corporations! With all that money you save by avoiding doing business with filthy Liberal garbage like you'd avoid the H5N1 Avian Influenza, spend it instead on fine goods and services provided by the solidly "Red" Republican corporations--beginning at the 51% "Red" rating, up to and including those corporations which have earned the coveted 100% "Red" rating, to wit: *Republican "Red" businesses sorted by patriotic loyalty rating: http://www.buyblue.org/company/ranking/donations?sort=desc&order=%25+Rep Companies which have stayed for the most part politically neutral ought to be supported as well. Don't boycott them. Conversely, We Republicans should *NEVER* do business with terrorist-supporting Liberal companies, beginning with their 51% "Blue" rating, all the way up to the viciously Anti-Christian 100% "Blue" rating, to wit: *Liberal "Blue" businesses sorted by unpatriotic disloyalty rating: http://www.buyblue.org/company/ranking/donations?sort=desc&order=%25+Dem For example, note that "Starbucks Corporation" is listed at 100% Liberal! Therefore *NEVER* buy coffee or anything else at Starbucks. *NEVER* spend one thin dime at any 'Starbucks' as long as you live. Remind all of your friends and associates to *NEVER* spend money at 'Starbucks', and help that Anti-Christian Liberal corporation's stock values plummet, and help them go bankrupt and O.O.B.! And study the "buyblue" list, email the cited URLs to friends & associates. Print it out, and make copies. Take the list with you anytime you go shopping, and *NEVER* patronize Liberal businesses! And if you're entertaining guests, politely ask any Liberals present to: "Get the HELL off my property and don't come back!" Remind Liberals that they are not welcome anywhere at anytime. Liberals are TRAITORS, and we need to be sure that Liberals lose their job, their home & their family. Above all, we need to be sure that Liberals ALWAYS lose the big federal elections, at all costs, and no matter what it takes: *NO-HOLDS-BARRED*! ^^ ^^^^^ ^^^^^^ This includes our N.S.A. continuing to surreptitiously spy on Liberals, particularly those who are even remotely involved with the terrorist- supporting DNC. This also means undermining Liberal-owned corporations through *every* time-tested wartime method at our collective disposal! Be creative. Anything you can do to hurt Liberals, by all means do it. ^^^^ ________________________________________________________________ And if you hire any of our brothers and sisters from south of the border -- be they legal or otherwise, -- remember that the majority of them are Christians. Remind them of how viciously Anti-Christian the A.C.L.U. is, and that the A.C.L.U. strongly backs the Liberal Democrats and other violently Anti-Christian pieces of garbage. Remind *all* of your employees to register and vote Republican across-the-board. That's a good motivation to make it easier for our Mexican friends to become legal, law- abiding, tax-paying American citizens. Reward Republican voters with a raise, a promotion, and a big fat Xmas bonus! But punish Liberal voters by firing them, and blackballing them from ever working for any Republican-owned business for the rest of their miserable lives--till they face Death & Hell: then the Judgment! Remind everyone that *Republicans* are the supporters of free speech and freedom of religion. Remind them that, by contrast, the Liberals HATE free speech and freedom of religion (unless it's Liberal Atheism, which is the official State religion of public schools -and- government agencies across the country). The A.C.L.U. especially *HATES* anyone who disagrees with them. If you disagree with Atheists, the A.C.L.U. wants you silenced. This is especially true if you're a Christian. The A.C.L.U. is the most egregiously Anti-Christian organization in the world! Remind everyone that the Liberals want to homosexualize, kidnap, brutally rape, sodomize, torture, and murder America's children. That's why it is so important to utterly *annihilate* and kill these criminally-insane Anti-American Anti-Christian pieces of inhuman garbage across-the-board. The legal way to kill them is by strictly voting Republican, and by exclusively doing business with our fellow Republicans. NEVER EVER do business with Liberals! And if you see a Liberal in public, call that vermin a terrorist- supporting *TRAITOR* nice and loud, so that everyone can hear it. *************************************************************** I witnessed something very similar to this happen at one of the major shopping malls in Denver, CO -- it was at a "food court". It was last Saturday, and the mall was really crowded. There was a table full of Republicans discussing how homosexuality is being forced down our children's collective throats in the public schools by *Liberal Democrats*, while Christians and Christianity is being outlawed, again, by the Anti-Christian Liberal Democrats. A lone Liberal sitting within earshot appeared to get upset about what was being said (probably a card-carrying member of A.C.L.U.- N.A.M.B.L.A.). This Liberal pedophile mumbled something under its breath about "repugnicans and neocons", and literally threw its tray of food on the floor, and stamped away. It was really funny! Everybody looked around at each other in sheer delight. This sick, mentally-disturbed piece of Liberal garbage showed its true colors. :-D *************************************************************** Thus to all of my fellow Republicans, please help spread the word. Email everyone you know, and post to every unmoderated usenet newsgroup on the planet. Post to every web-based blog and discussion board in existence. Republicans *MUST* stand united against the forces of evil, and kick every Liberal out the door and into the unemployment line--every chance we get. *VOTE* Republican! (and send Anti-American Liberals to Hell!) I seem to recall that the vast majority of minor planets have feminine names, and a lot of planetary satellites (perhaps most) have feminine names, too. For instance, of the Galilean satellites, only Ganymede is masculine. By the way, speaking of the Galilean satellites, I've heard some people who say EYE-oh get corrected because the "proper" pronunciation is EE-oh, which bothers me (the correction bothers me, that is). I would like to know what the "proper" pronunciation of Ganymede is. How is that name pronounced in Greek? -- Brian Tung <brian@isi.edu > The Astronomy Corner at http://astro.isi.edu/ Unofficial C5+ Home Page at http://astro.isi.edu/c5plus/ The PleiadAtlas Home Page at http://astro.isi.edu/pleiadatlas/ My Own Personal FAQ (SAA) at http://astro.isi.edu/reference/faq.html

Brian Tung wrote: > By the way, speaking of the Galilean satellites, I've heard some people > who say EYE-oh get corrected because the "proper" pronunciation is > EE-oh, which bothers me (the correction bothers me, that is). It bothers you rightly. Both pronunciations are used widely by educated people, and both can be supported by rigorous arguments. So it's silly to say that one is correct and the other is not. > I would > like to know what the "proper" pronunciation of Ganymede is. How is > that name pronounced in Greek? Well, I may not be telling you anything you don't know, but ... First of all, the Greek name is Ganymedes -- except that it's spelled with Greek letters, which do *not* have a one-to-one correspondence with Roman letters. The form without the final s is a Latinization. Latinizing Greek names is a practice that has been going on since antiquity, and in general, astronomy uses the Latinized versions. So it's not clear whether you should be asking how this word is (was) pronounced in Greek or how it is (was) pronounced in Latin. Second, how it's pronounced in Greece today is a whole different mattter from how it was pronounced in classical antiquity. Phonemes have drifted wildly in the intervening millenia. Finally, modern European languages have systematic ways of pronouncing classical languages which are neither how they were pronounced then nor how they are pronounced now. For instance, the universal Anglo-American pronounciation of Orion derives from the traditional English pronunciation scheme for Latin, and bares little resemblance to how this name was pronounced either in Greece or in ancient Rome, or how it is pronounced today in France, Germany, or Italy. - Tony Flanders

In the case of Latin, I can guess that both Classical and Ecclesiastical pronunciations are essentially GAH-nih-MAID-uh (without quite as hard a diphthong for MAID as there is in English). The e's are Greek eta, so they're long, and my guess is that the Latin pronunciation isn't too far from the Greek one. But my main point is that there are four syllables, not three, and the third syllable is probably not MEED, the way it is almost universally pronounced in English-speaking countries. So it's inconsistent to insist on the "proper," European pronunciation for Io, but not for Ganymede. -- Brian Tung <brian@isi.edu > The Astronomy Corner at http://astro.isi.edu/ Unofficial C5+ Home Page at http://astro.isi.edu/c5plus/ The PleiadAtlas Home Page at http://astro.isi.edu/pleiadatlas/ My Own Personal FAQ (SAA) at http://astro.isi.edu/reference/faq.html
