Seems like only some younger astronomers are looking rationally at the
planet issue while the "old guard" are buldozing ahead with their
myopic, nostalgic and STUPID plan to turn everything but NASA's old
space junk into planets. Ceres? Are they out of their F---- minds?
Or is alzheimers an affliction of astronmers as much as the general
population?
This isn't what I thought would happen to the IAU. Watching the
average age of amateurs climb over the years, I figured they'd just
fade into relative obscurity, every so often naming a new Moon feature
or asteroid. Perhaps the younger members would go on some
politically-correct jag and start naming astronomical objects after
African witch dors or Native American chiefs.
What has happened is disturbing and I hope they control themselves so
we don't up with hundreds of lumps of rock and ice being called
planets. Talk about cheapening the term. To put it in perspective,
try describing or naming all of Saturn's moons....

How do you know that only the older astronomers have put forth the new
definition? Why assume that the same people who have defined ONLY 9
objects as planets would want to broaden the definition that far?

They didn't propose that Ceres be named a planet, others leaped to that
conclusion.

Bullshit. The younger generation is the more politically conservative,
or haven't you been following events for the past 10 years? As for
naming objects, why not Native American chiefs? Makes as much sense as
obscure Greek deities. And why do they all have male names?

Why do you leap to the conclusion that "hundreds" of objects will
suddenly be named planets? The proposed definition is just
that--PROPOSED. It was put into play for the purpose of discussion
within the astronomical community and is far from being adapted.
In any case, the functioning of science will not be affected one bit by
a new definition.

Interestingly, Ceres was originally classified as a planet. It lost its'
status as a planet about fifty years after its' discovery.

That's great. However, if you read my message carefully, you'll see
that I'm actually interested in the pronunciation of *Ganymede*, not Io.
The Io pronunciation issue I've heard bandied about for 25 years. But
I never hear anyone complain about Ganymede being pronounced GAN-uh-meed
even though I'd guess that is not how it is pronounced in Greek. But I
am just guessing--I'm curious as to how it's really pronounced.

I witnessed something very similar to this happen at one of the
major shopping malls in Denver, CO -- it was at a "food court".
It was last Saturday, and the mall was really crowded. There
was a table full of Republicans discussing how homosexuality is
being forced down our children's collective throats in the public
schools by *Liberal Democrats*, while Christians and Christianity
is being outlawed, again, by the Anti-Christian Liberal Democrats.
A lone Liberal sitting within earshot appeared to get upset about
what was being said (probably a card-carrying member of A.C.L.U.-
N.A.M.B.L.A.). This Liberal pedophile mumbled something under its
breath about "repugnicans and neocons", and literally threw its
tray of food on the floor, and stamped away. It was really funny!
Everybody looked around at each other in sheer delight. This sick,
mentally-disturbed piece of Liberal garbage showed its true colors. :-D

I seem to recall that the vast majority of minor planets have feminine
names, and a lot of planetary satellites (perhaps most) have feminine
names, too. For instance, of the Galilean satellites, only Ganymede is
masculine.
By the way, speaking of the Galilean satellites, I've heard some people
who say EYE-oh get corrected because the "proper" pronunciation is
EE-oh, which bothers me (the correction bothers me, that is). I would
like to know what the "proper" pronunciation of Ganymede is. How is
that name pronounced in Greek?

It bothers you rightly. Both pronunciations are used widely by educated
people, and both can be supported by rigorous arguments. So it's silly
to say that one is correct and the other is not.

Well, I may not be telling you anything you don't know, but ...
First of all, the Greek name is Ganymedes -- except that it's spelled
with Greek letters, which do *not* have a one-to-one correspondence
with Roman letters. The form without the final s is a Latinization.
Latinizing Greek names is a practice that has been going on since
antiquity, and in general, astronomy uses the Latinized versions.
So it's not clear whether you should be asking how this word is
(was) pronounced in Greek or how it is (was) pronounced in Latin.
Second, how it's pronounced in Greece today is a whole different
mattter from how it was pronounced in classical antiquity. Phonemes
have drifted wildly in the intervening millenia.
Finally, modern European languages have systematic ways of
pronouncing classical languages which are neither how they were
pronounced then nor how they are pronounced now. For instance,
the universal Anglo-American pronounciation of Orion derives from
the traditional English pronunciation scheme for Latin, and bares
little resemblance to how this name was pronounced either in
Greece or in ancient Rome, or how it is pronounced today in
France, Germany, or Italy.

In the case of Latin, I can guess that both Classical and Ecclesiastical
pronunciations are essentially GAH-nih-MAID-uh (without quite as hard a
diphthong for MAID as there is in English). The e's are Greek eta, so
they're long, and my guess is that the Latin pronunciation isn't too far
from the Greek one.
But my main point is that there are four syllables, not three, and the
third syllable is probably not MEED, the way it is almost universally
pronounced in English-speaking countries. So it's inconsistent to
insist on the "proper," European pronunciation for Io, but not for
Ganymede.
