I'm preparing to purchase a high grade 6-inch refractor for visual and
photographic work.

How does Takahashi, TEC, and Astro-Physics refractors of this size
compare?

Are there any reviews around that look into a comparison between those
brands?

Any other comments are welcome.

Best regards,

The specs will tell you nearly all there is to say about the differences
between these scopes. The optical accuracy is for all practical purposes
equal. The TOA 150 is said to have extraordinary color correction but it
may be the slowest of the three to reach thermal equilibrium because of the
optical configuration I assume you're considering the AP 160 and TEC
140/160 along with the TOA?

Takahashi scopes are available more or less off the shelf. The other two
have long waiting lists. You might also want to check out TMB and Televue -
although I don't think Televue do a 6" refractor? I suspect the long lead
times for TEC & AP are largely because they are Ma & Pa type family
businesses that have quite limited production capacity combined with high
demand for their products. Check out the following web sites for reviews:

When I was in the market for an apo I looked at TeleVue, TEC,
TMB, Astro-Physics and Takahashi.

It came down to a process of elimination:

TeleVue didn't do medium format prime focus.

TEC were quoting near-Astro-Physics lead times.

TMB had a very cosy exclusive dealer relationship that made purchase
difficult.

I'm damned if I'm going to wait that long for Astro-Physics.

So I got a Takahashi TOA-130F. Textbook-perfect images.
Great pictures. Zero false colour. I'm delighted with it.

Astro-Physics = Best
Takahashi = Better
TEC = Good
