I managed to get set-up with the LX-90 and a ToUcam Pro for the crash
of the Smart-1 probe on the lunar surface. Being unfamiliar with the
topography around the Lake of Excellence, I took a whack at framing the
area that I thought would be targeted. I could not lay a hand on my 6.3
reducer so I ended up getting it at f/10 instead. Oh, well...at least
the clouds gave me a break.

Excellent. There is a professional image at http://spaceweather.com

I note that the e-mail from Spaceweather said the flash "was too faint for
most backyard telescopes." I suspect you may be the first of a number of
amateurs who managed to catch it.

Clear skies, Alan

Probably they meant too faint to actually see it happen. The webcam or CCD
would tell a different story.

Excellent. There is even a brief after glow. I didn't see anything at
160X's.

Nice, Peter! I can't believe you beat the clouds, too.
Is that the LX-90 you won at TSP?

Well done. You may also be the first to publish; before I read your
post I searched high and low on the WWW for an image, but came up
empty-handed.

I had my own plans, but my 'scope doesn't work so well during a
hurricane.

Hi Les,

Yes, I used the 8" LX-90 I received for the door prize at TSP 2003

Clear skies,

Here is a link to compare the flash contours of my AVI and the data
from the CFHT team.

http://cosmonut.org/flashcontourcomparison.jpg

I tried to keep the north (upper right) orientation, but I am unsure
about the east-west axis. What do you think?

Well, I was thinking what else the flash in your video could be, and the
only other thing it could be is a faint meteor that was heading right
towards you, which would appear as a point of light rapidly coming and
going. However, I don't think so because wouldn't such a thing be a lot
brighter than what appears to be recorded. 8-inch SCT (that was your
telescope, right?) with a ToUcam with gain pumped up all the way, you
should be able to record down to about, what, 10th mag or so without
stacking the images?

So it had to be the impact event. Any other guesses?

Clear and Steady Nights !
