Subject: Sidewalk Astro (sort of) in Omaha

My daughter's fifth grade science class is doing a unit on the solar
system, so I volunteered to bring a couple of solar filter equipped 'scopes
over to the school when they got to the Sun. The science teacher readily
accepted and yesterday (Friday) was the day. I had my Stellarvue Nighthawk
with a Thousand Oaks 2+ filter and Meade LXD55 SN6 with a Kendrick visual
filter and an assortment of eyepieces. I set up on the school's lawn near
the parking lot and did presentations to two classes. My daughter was the
only one who had ever looked through a "real" telescope before. Most of
the kids were really impressed, even though there were only two little
spots on the sun. A couple of kids, unsurprisingly, were nonplussed.
After talking generally about telescopes, the Omaha Astronomical Society,
the sun and spots, the kids set about drawing what they had seen. Between
class presentations, I was able to show the sun to a number of parents who
were starting to show up for afternoon dismissal. A few came over to me to
ask if there was eclipse happening. The parents were all genuinely
interested, and a few voiced the hope that I had another child in their
kid's grade so I could the same presentation for them. I heard one guy say
to his friend as they walked away, "You know, I have an old telescope in
the basement...I should dig it out..." I know this doesn't put me in
Starlord's category, but it was a lot of fun.

Hay, I'd love to copy your post and add it to my blog under your name, I
wish the schools around here would do something like that, but if it's not
dealing with alfafa they don't care.
