Latest ed. of a British astro mag (Astronomy) tested five high-end
refractors. Interesting results, especially the optical tests two in
the subject line. Both were 100mm apos. The Chinese one was the new
gold version of the inexpensive basic apos that came on scene a few
years back.

Well, I have no data here. One has to be VERY careful of what Rich says,
since much is simply troll bait...

But I DO have some interest in the upcoming (vaporware at present, though a
handful of the little ones have made it into consumer hands) Meade Chinese
connection 80 and 127mm triplet APO's...

I certainly don't expect these to be in direct competition with AP or TMB
APOs, but I think they might be very interesting in the consumer market...

Jan,

I may be interested in one of those too! How do you know that they are
Chinese? The Meade rep at NEAF this year told me that the 127mm lens will
be made in Japan and the rest of the scope in the US. Was he mis-informed?

No, there has been no leak from Meade, on condition of anonymity, like is
typical of the US press on political matters, that this scope is made in
China...

Just a number of clues pieced together from things Meade has said, and
*photos* of the vaporware...

I'd be more comfortable with a triplet from Japan, for sure, but I don't
think you could get an OTA of this aperture from Japan (or assembled in the
US using an objective from Japan) for anything even remotely close to the
advertised price, even though this ISN'T made with the best ED glass,
according to other data from Meade...

Where can we buy a 4 inch apo OTA, that tests well on the bench, for $800?

Hi Rich:

Astronomy Now?

At any rate, while I haven't used a Stellarvue 100mm, I've been
mightily impressed by the new Chinese apos I've looked through,
particularly the WO 80s and 66es.

No, it was the BBC Sky at Night magazine, September 2006 issue.

Also, Churchill's little hat he used to wear.

I can just see Moore giving a talk at an astronomy club and in the
middle of a sentence pertaining to telescopes, lapse into a Churchill
routine; ".......their finest hour".

Ah, the 105ED, no less.

Hmmm, which triplet? Let me guess...

The price was UKP 799 (that's UK pounds, not US$). The tests appeared
in
the September 2006 issue of "BBC Sky at Night", pages 90-98. Tested
were
and "win" order are:

1. Sky-Watcher Evostar-100ED2 Pro (UKP 799)
2. Televue 102i (UKP 2,200)
3. Borg 101ED (UKP 1,361)
4. William Optics Zenithstar 110 (UKP 1,599.99)
5. Stellarvue 105ED (UKP 2,899)

Never heard of a Stellarvue 105ED. There was once a Stellarvue 105
f/6.2 made with a TMB triplet.

If that is the scope tested, then you are comparing an f/9 scope
(Skywatcher) to an f/6.2 scope (Stellarvue). Sort of an apples and
oranges comparison. If the test was photographic, was a flattener of
any design used with the Stellarvue?

If the test was visual, don't you think identical EPs would perform
better in an f/9 scope than at f/6.2?

You can pry my SV105 out of my cold, dead hands.

It is not surprising, my skywatcher 80 ED is, on the whole, at least as
good as my TMB 115. Colour correction, the focuser (feathertouch) are
better on the TMB, but for the rest (star test, aspect of the field in the
corners of CCD/SLR exposures, etc...) the 80ED has the edge.

Rich,

You are really ONLY a troll...

And most folks understand that...

But let me help you here...

I've been on the waiting list for one of the Meade 127mm triplets since
March...

You never have a clue... All you are looking for is some sort of attention,
as are most mentally disturbed trolls... So have fun... Or take your
meds...

In the meantime, go suck your thumb, or whatever...

mostly only self-serving...

Once upon a time, I respected what you had to say, but no longer...

I doubt it. I saw the article in the magazine. I don't think they'd
post the whole thing on the net.

They do have a webpage:

but the articles and reviews don't appear to be online.

Snore. And yet you feel the need to interject. P.S. If what the
magazine said hurt your little expensive apo feelings, go cry to them.
