I shot a roll of K14 Kodachome film and now I'm having trouble finding a lab
to do the film. One I found chages $25.00 a roll, OUCH. Does anyone know of
a lab that does this slide film for a fair price?

There are, according to Kodak's web site, only three labs
on the entire planet that still process Kodachrome. Sounds
like you're SOL.

Kodachrome is an interesting process, with each layer
developed and dyed separately. But it also means that
you need very specialized equipment to process it, and
you can't do it yourself. Quite a contrast to E6, which
is dead easy to do yourself...

Hi Dennis:

Pay the 25 and be happy. Even in 2001 when I was doing my last book
where I shot Kodachrome, it was becoming harder to get it processed.

A user from SAA gave me the web address of a lab and I'll be mailing off the
film on monday and they do my 24 shot roll of $6.00 plus $5 for
shipping/handling. That's a whole lot better than $25.00 and having to wait
for an unknown time until they get enough to do a batch. And that lab even
said it could be up to 2 to 3 weeks or more.

It's a shame, I used to shoot that film almost 100% of the time, all of my
photos from Vietnam where shot using that slide film. at lest 75% of my
slides where shot using that film.

Lucky you - Kodachrome slides actually will last for awhile - all other
color photos, slides, prints, and negatives, have a short lifetime.
Digital has the disadvantage that one has to constantly be moving it to
newer media ahead obsolescence.

I've got B&W photos of great grandparents and Kodachrome from later
generations that survived being dumped into boxes and stashed away in
the garage or attic with no special care.

Who out there thinks their descendants will repeatedly transfer digital
memorabilia to new formats religiously over the next century? For a few
decades we had the possibility that pictorial family history would be
preserved indefinitely - now we have reverted to possessing over the
long term only oral and written family history just as previous
centuries. And it was purely by unforeseen accident of technology that
the public hasn't even noticed.

You can still take the same route as our ancestors -- print your digital
images and pass the prints on. Some papers and ink are now available that
should last longer than most previous technology. Time will tell but it
seems promising.

I recently inherited photos and albums of ancestors going back a very long
time. Some haven't fared well but many did. We're scanning many and
printing them for the kids and grandkids.

Back in the 1970's I picked up an old folding camera at a yard sale, it had
a film pack in it that dated back to 1918. I shot up the last few shots,
then had a lab do them for me and make prints. This was B/W film. I took a
look at the WW1 photos and was able to sell them and the negs to a guy who
said he was archiving photos from that war. He paid me a very good price for
them too. Out of the 12 shots I had used 3.

That camera was lost in the great 1987 ripoff.

Yes, good film and prints do have real lasting value. Even my Ektachromes
have lasted well over 30 - 40 years.

not to mention the fact that all modes of digital storage are far shorter
lifetime than paper! Ask any archivist.

With *that* much difference in price .. I'd be *very* cautious about sending
important film to them. A cheap price is NOTHING if they ruin the film ..
what are they going to do .. give you your $6.00 back?

That more than what you'd get back from other labs, I know, I've had other
labs lose my photos and never find them. That's why for my prints I use
snapfish.com and for this one roll of slides which seems I either pick a lab
that says they'll be done WHENEVER they have enough to do them (do time
limit for waiting for them to be done) and pay a fee that is something else.
Of pick the other lab which charges a lot less fee and does them overnight
and sends them out next day.

I'll go with the 2nd one.

Unic Camera is as trustworthy as this group is long! The owner
has a ms in physics-astronomy, was Dr John Neff's res assistant,
and has a 30+ year history of astro photography which you will never
match! If thats not credential nuff for ya then go with 'Student Painters"

contact University Camera at Iowa City, IA and see of they will/
can. They process everything else at fair prices. Plus the owner is
an ex grad assist.in astronomy.

Hi Dennis:

It was great film. However, I did the images for my last book with a
digital camera rather than shooting Kodachrome transparencies. I would
never, ever want to go back!

That's exactly what Dwayne's charge. If you go to
Kodak's web page and type in "Kodachrome", the
first hit is a list of the three labs in the world who still
do Kodachrome.
