Subject: Mt Wilson Observatory, a night on the 16 inch

Tonight I took advantage of discretionary time on the 16 inch
telescope, by having a friend and 10 other guests up to the
observatory. I was able to show them many objects, despite the full
moon.

Hind's Crimson Star, Betelgeuse, M31, M42, the Moon and Saturn.

The telescope operated flawlessly. Nothing better for a telescope
operator to have a session go off with no glitches.

Many came with cameras and shot pictures afocally.

Very tired now, but had a good time.

I know the moon was bright, but still not full until Monday night.

And next Saturday Night I'll be running my Star Party at the park if it's
clear.

I stand corrected.

The terminator was visible just at the edge, so the guests could see
some of the extended shadows at the rims of the craters and mountains.

I am not much of a moon observer/ lecturer, but when the moon is so
dominant you have to adapt your presentation and talk a lot about it,
and also show folks double stars, planets etc instead of faint fuzzies.

I was able to show the guests Saturn and many were able to take photos
that were showing the ring. I was surprised at the photo quality
despite the unsteady air and the low elevation of the planet.

It's a bit surprizing that on some of the full moon nights I'll get more
people stepping up to my Babylon 10 scope than other nights.
