Here are some more scopes from Chiefland (perhaps not as exotic as the first ones I listed in the other thread, but I like them all!) http://www.comsketch.com/celestronlosmandy.JPG http://www.comsketch.com/celestrontak.JPG http://www.comsketch.com/cfasscopes2.JPG http://www.comsketch.com/discoverybigpurple.JPG http://www.comsketch.com/discoveryred.JPG http://www.comsketch.com/discoverytruss.JPG http://www.comsketch.com/dobsonianalley.JPG http://www.comsketch.com/edgeoffield.JPG http://www.comsketch.com/meadeflash2.JPG http://www.comsketch.com/meadeflash.JPG http://www.comsketch.com/meadelightbridge.JPG http://www.comsketch.com/meades.JPG http://www.comsketch.com/meadestarfinder.JPG http://www.comsketch.com/nicerefractor.JPG http://www.comsketch.com/nightskydob.JPG http://www.comsketch.com/oaktree.JPG http://www.comsketch.com/obsession12point5.JPG http://www.comsketch.com/obsession18.JPG http://www.comsketch.com/obsession18another.JPG http://www.comsketch.com/oriongearedup.JPG http://www.comsketch.com/orionstargazer.JPG http://www.comsketch.com/piermadefromflagpole.JPG http://www.comsketch.com/refractorrow.JPG http://www.comsketch.com/seetheshow.JPG http://www.comsketch.com/shortrefractor.JPG http://www.comsketch.com/stabletakahashi.JPG http://www.comsketch.com/starstructure1.JPG http://www.comsketch.com/starstructureandjunior.JPG http://www.comsketch.com/takahashistable.JPG http://www.comsketch.com/topheavy.JPG http://www.comsketch.com/trussdob2.JPG http://www.comsketch.com/trussdob3.JPG http://www.comsketch.com/trussdob4.JPG http://www.comsketch.com/trussdob.JPG http://www.comsketch.com/trussdobstwo.JPG The above are only some of the scopes, there were many more that were either covered or I didn't have time to get. Jason, More great pic's! The scope above has an old Byres 58 mount which is a type I owned for years before selling. This scope has the type of mount that I replaced the 58 with, an MI-250. > The above are only some of the scopes, there were many more that were > either covered or I didn't have time to get. Perhaps it was your selection of targets, but it seems that there were few if any home-made scopes, while they are quite common at the star parties I go to. George Normandin

He said he's better at making them than finding stuff with them (even though they were very well guided with stepper motors.) These were also posted before: http://www.comsketch.com/checkoutthismount.JPG http://www.comsketch.com/checkoutthismount2.JPG http://www.comsketch.com/oaktree.JPG and this pier was made from a flagpole http://www.comsketch.com/piermadefromflagpole.JPG My friend Dave's scope was there this year (which is "home-made"), I took these shots of it at last year's Chiefland star party http://www.comsketch.com/davehscope1.JPG http://www.comsketch.com/davehscope2.JPG You are right, I saw only a couple of home-made scopes this year, but they were under wraps when I went around with the camera. The maker of the Starstructure scopes makes his scopes by hand and has been coming to Chiefland; within the last year he brought this naked/unpainted Starstructure that he was fine-tuning right next to where I was set up: http://www.comsketch.com/prototypestarstructurenopaint.JPG http://www.comsketch.com/unpaintedstarstructure.JPG which contributed to convincing a nearby woman from my club to buy a 16". I asked him how he makes them, and it wasn't on an assembly line, he hand makes each one in his shop (at least he did a year ago). This year there were many large Starstructure scopes on the field. These next two were also at Chiefland last year: http://www.comsketch.com/handmadebeauty.JPG http://www.comsketch.com/anotherhandmadebeauty.JPG Regards, Jason H.

I the ladder that was in these photos! Being the owner of an Obsession 20 I'm always on the lookout for a 'better ladder'! George N

Yes. Dave told me that for one axis he is using an old Thomas Mathis gear drive that he's had for 20 years. For the DEC he's using a new Opticraft drive. I believe that at Chiefland he worked out a glitch with a spring-loaded worm gear and clutch, and he was able to do some imaging that night. If you go to http://www.procyon-sys.com , Dave has an ATM section with a slideshow that you can control which shows how the rest of the scope was built (he told me that because of the difficulty of building this scope, he does not build these scopes for other people.) Dave also uses Scopelink which is their guiding hardware solution using 8192 step optical encoders (which they sell) to provide accurate scope positioning information to help find deep-sky objects. I've seen his system in use with voice annunciation, it's cool. I'm sure Dave would answer any questions if you would like more information about the scope or their scope guiding solutions.
