First, I should preface this by acknowledging that this
subject has been thoroughly dealt with, debated, argued,
discussed, analyzed, synthesized, settled, ad infinitum
for many long-forgotten millennia through the ages past.
As Solomon Neptune said "...no new thing under the sun".

And as I've written seven books on the subject, I'm not
intent on reinventing the wheel here. Everybody already
knows what the menorah is, in its seven, eight and nine
branched varieties. They are as simple as eight candles
sitting side by side, or so elaborate as to be priceless.
With so many types and designs, made from virtually every
material available on planet Earth, of all sizes, shapes,
colors, etc., suffice to say the menorah has been around
since humankind have walked the face of the Earth--surely
tens of millions of sidereal Earth-years & counting...

With that out of the way, I want to address the problem
specifically with the nine-branched menorah as used for
the eight-day celebration of Hanukkah, which this year
commences late afternoon today, just before sunset (at
this writing Venus' Day 15 December 2006; 24-25 Kislev
5767; 12.19.13.16.2 15 Mac 3 Ik; 24-25 Dhu I-Qa`da 1427;
Julian day 2454085.xx, Tropical day 23SagXX, etc. etc...

The traditional menowrah (Heb. hrwnm; Exo 25:31ff] was
described by the great Hebrew-Xian-Roman Josephus thus:

"Over against this table, near the southern wall, was
set a candlestick of cast gold, hollow within, being
of the weight...a talent. It was made with its knops,
and lilies, and pomegranates, and bowls by which means
the shaft elevated itself on high from a single base,
and spread itself into as many branches as there are
planets, including the sun in the midst of them. It
terminated in seven heads, in one row, all standing
parallel to one another; and these branches carried
seven lamps, one by one, in imitation of the number
of the planets....." [Antiq. IIIvi7; ibid]

The following illustration is copied from my 'Apocalypse
Commentary', Chapter 1, simply approximating the ancient
seven-branched menorah. The common nine-branched version
adds the outer planets Uranus and Neptune, but otherwise
maintains the same principle i.e. seven seven-tone modes;
with the two added outer-planet limbs indicated as shown:

There are those who believe that life here, began out there, far across the
universe, with tribes of humans, who may have been the forefathers of the
Egyptians, or the Toltechs, or the Mayans. Some believe that they may yet be
brothers of man, who even now fight to survive, somewhere beyond the
heavens.

Yet YOU continue to feed him the beans he craves to generate
his hot gasses with cross-posting to boot.

Amazing.

If ya notice, the majority of cross posters
are also top posters :)

Still you are right. People complain about
someone's post, and then commit the WORSE
offense by cross posting to other news groups,
when it is so easy to check before you send.
What ever happened to net etiquette ??
Easiest way to make people think you are a noob
and not wise in the ways of the net.

I guess it's a new variation on how to make enemies
before you even know they are there.

Also doesn't help us here out at all. Other ng's must
think amateur astronomers are crazy...

The problem with connecting the Menorah to the myth is the centerpiece one had
only seven candles. It is depicted on the Arch of Titus found in Rome.
