Worst example are the utility companies. They send out really glossy
material justifying the rate hike they just spent $$$ pushing through
the PUC .. both at the subscriber's expense.

Why would anyone pay for a Meade Catalog?

Anyone who buys a Meade product is "paying" for the catalog .. and ads
in mags. True of any company and any product.

With all the glossy color catalogs some companies send out the door free of
charge, I wonder how much it costs me when I make a purchase.

Phil,

We now get ads with our license and registration renewals from DMV. Perhaps
the IRS could get a new revenue stream by including ads with our tax forms.

Advertising has become far too pervasive for my liking.

Sometimes, when I remember, I do what a college friend always did - I
just tear off (or whatever) all those ads that come with the bills, and
without filling in a single blank, mail them back to the biller in the
same envelope as my payment. Let them throw them away. ;-}

Hmm... now if we could just get all the other catalog retailers to do
the same (most of whom have perfectly good online access). Then I could
pick up my mail every few days and not worry about the mailbox
overflowing.

Not to play the devil's advocate here, but producing and mailing
quality catalogs can be a rather costly proposition. You have
photography, design, printing, bindery, storage and mailing costs.

And since Meade is not a direct reseller of their products, trying to
recoup some of the associated production and distribution costs sounds
like a fiscally prudent thing to do.

Especially since statistically the number of people who receive free or
paid catalogs represents a tiny percentage of actual buyers.

C'mon it's half a sawbuck. What's a bottle of Rebel Yell go fo?

Probably part of the management cleanup, the "Operational Cost Control
Initiatives" they announced July, 27. A most reasonnable decision. But they
could make their catalogue available as a nice PDF...
