You have photography, design, printing, bindery, storage and mailing costs. And since Meade is not a direct reseller of their products, trying to recoup some of the associated production and distribution costs sounds like a fiscally prudent thing to do. Especially since statistically the number of people who receive free or paid catalogs represents a tiny percentage of actual buyers. C'mon it's half a sawbuck.
