The Mars G Surveyor after 10 years has apparently gone
silent finally.

I think it's a little premature to assume that the failure is permanent.
But even if it is, that spacecraft has significantly outperformed its
original program. We've certainly gotten our money's worth from MGS.

No one said that someone said we didn't! <g > I just think it's worth
pointing out how much value we've gotten from this particular mission.

Tell that to people who go to bed hungry every night. They have
concerns other than whether you get some vicarious thrill from the
same old Mars images or whether your new APO is better than some
other rich loon's APO.

So what, you think every program that doesn't feed people should be
canceled? You think if we didn't go to Mars, more people would eat?

I pay taxes, and I feel I got more than my money's worth from the
mission.

In case you didn't notice, the data is public; it doesn't belong to JPL.

I live on the edge, being a disabilted vietnam vet is not fun, but twb
should stop and think, every project that gets built and flown into space
funnels $$ into the eco system and that leads some of that $$ going into
such thinks as supplying food banks, etc. What we send out to the planets
amounts to maybe a lost(if you view it as that, I don't) of only about 5 to
10% of the overall cost.

Hell look at the rovers, made to last 90 mars days, now passed their 1,000th
day.

But he'd most likly complain about that too. He doesn't belong here.

Oh ya, I 've got 3 dobs myself. Two of them where donated and even the one I
build the parts where donated (mirros and rockerbox) I paid for the sono
tube myself.

I wonder how much he'd donated to the local food banks?

Silly, redundant programs that endlessly duplicate what has already
been done should be cancelled and I mean cancelled NOW. When we no
longer have people in this country going to bed hungry at night, then
and only then should money foolishly wasted on "outer space" be
considered for funding.

How many people must starve before you and your kind have your fill of
pretty pictures from the Moon or Mars or wherever else money has been
sent. Stupid, stupid, stupid.....and for what?

Thank God the Democrats are back in power, we may finally rearrange
our national priorities (cancelling every one of these silly space
missions would be a great start) and if need be, passing laws
outlawing individuals from making pointless and outrageously expensive
purchases, suchs as APOs & CCDs. There's only so much money to go
around, and it shouldn't go for nonsense. Tax, tax, tax, tax rich
astronomers and feed the poor!

Apparently \Ap*par"ent*ly\, adv.
1. Visibly. [Obs.] --Hobbes.
[1913 Webster]

2. Plainly; clearly; manifestly; evidently.
[1913 Webster]

If he should scorn me so apparently. --Shak.
[1913 Webster]

3. Seemingly; in appearance; as, a man may be apparently
friendly, yet malicious in heart.
[1913 Webster]

Apparently, you're not entirely aware of the meaning of the word
"apparently".
