Following the logic applied by the IAU, Linguists Noah Chomsky and
Jeffrey Nunn have pointed out the word Planet starts with 'p'. So does
'Pluto' !

They contend Pluto must be reduced further in status and remaned. "You
cannot have a non-planet starting with the letter P", says Jeff Nunn.

Nunn and Chomsky plan to file a petition with the IAU asking they rename
Pluto.

Chomsky warns: "The word Potatoe is already taken".

HI Wally:

Sorry. Potatos have EYES NOT TOES.

I'm sorry you feel bad for Pluto, though, but he is quite happy doing
what he's doing and does not appreciate your concern. He can't, you
see, being a non-conscious ball of rock and ice at a temperature close
to -273.

I dont feel bad for Pluto or even Tombaugh in the maine. I do feel bad for
ordinary
language, ordinary common sense, and billions who will struggle to make
sense out
of a sensless myopic rendering of pseudo micro-management that leads to
further confusion. It's pathetic and ridiculous. I find it a little too
gratuitous and narcisistic, frankly.

As Noam Chomsky has commented: "Let's name Pluto, Ditto!".

This is an example of irony, right? Calling the IAU narcissistic, then
quoting Chomsky.

Perhaps -- however language does evolve. We no longer consider the
Sun and Moon "planets" even though we did so some 600+ years ago.
That changed the meaning of the word "planet", from "wandering point
of light in the sky" to "body orbiting the Sun". Later the
definition was changed to "sufficiently large body orbiting the Sun",
that was some 150 years ago, when Ceres, Pallas, Juno, Vesta was removed
from the realm of the planets. Now the definition has been refined
further.

The actions of some people may have been pathetic and ridiculous (and
this does include all those launching all these "Save Pluto" campaigns),
but the definition makes good sense IMO.

Hi:

Sorry, but that makes no sense. "Pluto" is still to be called "Pluto."
What do you think is going to happen? He'll have his name repossessed
and a big tow-truck will pull him out of the Solar System?!

Good point! The obvious choice, of course, is Bluto.

I wonder how much you'd have to pay Disney to use it.

You wouldn't have to pay Disney anything. Bluto is a character
from the Popeye cartoons. Last time I looked, King Features
Syndicate owned the rights to Popeye, not Disney.

Great news! Do you think I should start a petition?
