You see something good posted about a Meade product and immediately launch a passive/aggressive attack on the company and/or its products - erroneously assuming that you have somehow positioned yourself above the fold.

Hi: Meade makes good stuff and bad stuff. Just like Celestron, Vixen, and the other middle of the road (i.e. non custom/high quality) manufacturers. Both companies have been guilty of stepping on their users' toes in the past, and will no doubt continue to do so in the future. I like Meade gear. They are hardly perfect, however. And while the good outweighs the bad with 'em IMHO, they aren't and shouldn't be above criticism. I know what you're talking about, though, Martin. There are some folks who wouldn't say a good word about the Irvine bunch if they produced a 6-inch refractor ten times better than a Tak 150 for 1/10th the price. On the other hand...what provoked this? Something other than a just desire to stir the pot, I hope. Which this will no doubt do anyway... ;-) Peace, Rod Mollise Author of: Choosing and Using a Schmidt Cassegrain Telescope and The Urban Astronomer's Guide <http://skywatch.brainiac.com/astroland >

Any time I buy something for a lot of money, I believe I have the right to attempt to negotiate the terms of the purchase with a proviso to protect myself from, say, the worst particular 8" telescope built that week or whatever. Spending 1 to 10 K on a scientific instrument without first having a way to check out the instrument is probably not the optimal way to approach the purchase. It is like buying a used 911. If you are not a mechanic yourself and you don't take a good one with you to check out the car you stand a good chance of being unhappy. Use common sense buying telescopes. They are less mass produced than microscopes and will have a greater variation in optical quality inside a production run. Like early VWs, the Monday car was always the worst because of the consumption of beer in Germany on Sat and Sunday. That is what the test drive was supposed to fix. Buy something cold and untested and then ranting about what you got and how upset you are never produces good results, it irritates the people reading your post and it makes one look foolish. I know this first hand by several times ignoring the above advice. I've seen Cave 10" telescopes that were 1/20 wave p-v and I've seel the same model come out at 1/2 wave p-v. It is almost as problematic as social dating. :-) Jim Klein "RMOLLISE" <rmollise@hotmail.com > wrote: > >Martin R.
