This is an Invite to any Astronomer to show up on the night (evening)
9/9/06 at the corner of Rosamond Blvd and B St in the town of Rosamond
Calif. This night will mark the 8th year of me setting up there for
Sidewalk Astronomy. Any Astronomer that shows up will get to use my scope
and I'll try to have a ice chest of cold sodas too.

That's easily the downright dumbest thing I read here so far.

Why do you think that it is dumb? I think it is great that Starlord is
sharing the night sky with as many folks as possible and I would attend this
event if I lived in the area.

I don't see anything dumb about it. Seems like a nice sentiment to me. If
I were in the area, I might load up one of my scopes and head on over.

For anyone who was curious like me, here is a map:

and here is the light pollution (centered on Edwards Air Force Base which is
just East of Rosamond)

The LP from Edwards is very weak, it doesn't really do anything unless it's
very dusty from high winds or it's cloudy. The LP from the
Palmdale/Lancaster is worst and keeps me from doing anything in the way of
viewing down under about 20degrees.

Most of Edwards is blocked by the small hills inbetween Edwards and
Rosamond. Heck if I was a bit more north and facing Mojave itself I'd get a
lot more LP from there.

Besides, being a Sidewalk Astronomer I am under stteet lights anyway.

There's some photos of the corner, both daytime and night time in the photo
section of my web site.

Hope you have a great time. I'll be in China that weekend so won't be able
to make it. We're travelling light so I won't be able to bring our 6" eq
mount reflector nor even my binoculars in my backpack. In fact, I'm even
keeping my camera equipment to a minimum.

All I get is a file downloaded and windows tells me it doesn't have a viewer

top of FF there.

You need to download the app' "Google Earth" from the Google website.
It's a great application!

The Google Earth location file is a renamed ZIP file. If you extract
the contents of that file, you end up with an XML file that you can
read with any ASCII editor. In that file are the coordinates
-118.1691474732376,34.86441388888889 (talk about overkill! You could
perform geo-referenced microsurgery with that many decimal places).

I seem to recall that Starlord's computer resources are somewhat
mismatched for Google Earth. If I may suggest flashearth instead, the
coordinates translate to
118° 10' 09" W, 34° 51' 52"N, so:
http://www.flashearth.com/?lat=34.864234&lon=-118.168978&z=17.4&r=0&src=2
would be the URL to pull up a map with some steet names.

I'd forgotten about Starlord's computer resources, sorry about that...

You're absolutely right though Dale, FlashEarth is a great site. My home
location shows in far better resolution there than it does in Google
Earth.

Ah yes, another graphics program I have never installed on this machine. I
can do without flash, the one time I installed it and ran a flash file, it
looked just like my old Atari 800XL screen but in low graphics mode. So
killed the file and flash along with it.

The ONLY graphics type program I have is the one I must have to run
Incredimail of which I'm both a user and creator of.
