It's only half done. They just spend $100m+ putting solar panels on
it. When I think of how many good exploratory missions they could
have done with that money, it makes me sick. The ISS is the biggest
piece of "space junk" the U.S. has ever orbited.

You could be right. We want to see results. Just what are they doing up
there
that benefits humanity? Are they just making it another example of
what -could- be,
in-ter-national-y;in the spirit of global co-operation and human endeavor to
the great unknown?
To the final frontier? around and round and round it goes where it will stop
nobody knows?

If we had the ISS, at the expense of of the science missions studying
the Earth, Sun (err, I mean Marty) and other solar system objects, I
would agree with you--and have posted so in the past. But I am hoping
that Congress will make adequate appropriations so that we can make
significant progress in the science as well as manned space flight. The
$100 B has bought a lot more that the current ISS, but much technology
and product in our lives.

At least they don't keep morphing their email address to defeat
everyone's kill filters, apparently after discovering nobody was reading
them anymore...

The ISS is worth every penny; it is the logical next step to a greater
presence in space, regardless of the many who have become so cynical and
jaded they can no longer see that.

The idea that the money spent on on the ISS would go to unmanned
exploration otherwise is so naive as to be laughable!

How someone combine such cynicism and naivate in the same paragraph is
beyond me.

Regardless, this isn't a topic for SAA and you are a misanthropic troll
and once again, PLONK.

Damn. I clicked "Send" instead of "Delete". Don't you hate it when
that happens? Well, it's not like I didn't mean every word I guess.
Anyhow, my apologies for the errant post.

The problem with the inernational space station is that
it is the international space station.

We should have done it alone, with perhaps help from
Canada, Great Britian and Australia.

I'll bet there's lots of corruption with the contracts.
Just look at the container the Italians built to carry
garbage back in the shuttle.

Even in space, the Italians get the trash hauling contract.

Go figure.

But we Need to have a full time station in earth orbit, to me this satation
is far SHORT of what should have been built. A good full sized station could
be used to help send out some of those probes you are felling sorry for.

Right. Eleven nations, particularly the USA, should write-off the ISS
and solicit Rich the TROLL's spending ideas before doing anything else.

You'd be 100% wrong there. I am all for SPACE travel. Not sitting

considering that the war in Iraq is closing in on $400 billion, I
would say it is money that is better spent than on Iraq. At least the
death toll is far less.

Its not about two wrongs or any right.

Simply where priorities lies. Either action can be justified. So in
the perception of the beholder, the action is considered right.
Personally I would rather see about 1 trillion dollars spent elsewhere
but then this is not the forum for that line of discussion.

Just think, if that $400 billion could have been spent by NASA hell We'd be
on the moon already.

I want a space satation like the one in the movie 2001.

Aw, come on. Just look at the figures: The Iraq war is costing about
$115 billion per year. Casualty figures are difficult to estimate, but
if we assume 50,000 people have died, that's $2.3 million per corpse.

NASA's budget is $16 billion per year and they kill an average of only
about 0.6 people per year, which works out to a whopping $27 billion per
corpse!

Clearly NASA isn't anywhere near efficient enough to earn the really big
bucks.
