I'm thinking about picking up a Howie Glatter laser collimator and have a few questions. First off, is there any reason to shell out an extra $25 for a 635nm Holographic laser rather than a 650nm version? And secondly, I'll probably only use it in my 2" focuser, but thought perhaps I'd use the 2"/1.25" version in fellow astronomers' scopes. Is there any advantage to getting the 2" instead of the more flexible 2"/1.25" version? Thanks. -Fleemo

Sam, Sure, and I'm the first person to admit I'm just as prone to mistakes (possibly more) than the next guy but I would think that anyone who is selling such a product would make other human mistakes...not one of carlessness...after a big one of ... Judgement...oh, let's seee...it's OK to bring it to BFSP??? When everyone, including those who sponsor BFSP say specifically NOT TO bring it? Nope, I'm sorry.. Yes, mistakes happen, yes accidents of all kinds happen... But.... If you are told not to... And you do it anyway... Pretty big, fat mistake in judgement. Too terribly bad if I decide NOT to purchase from this retailer:( In any event, it could not have been my aqaintance but me or my buddy... A chilling thought...

Besides which, that could have just as easily been me and it would have been a huge mistake....I don't take tooo terribly kindly to folks who want to poke my eye out either. Only God knows what I would have done...:(

Dennis, I don't personally know him but I'm sorry I can't patronize someone who is that careless. He should have known better...the damage is done. If I buy, I will buy from someone else. Hey, this is America and in retailing if you can't give your customer what he wants he can and does go elsewhere. And that goes double for someone who is a potential customer.

No damage was done, and it was just a stupid accident. Howie makes a good product and stands behind it. I have no problem dealing with him. _________________________________________________ Chris L Peterson Cloudbait Observatory http://www.cloudbait.com

BTW the human eye is more sensitive to 635nm.

I was at BFSP but didn't see this happen. I think it's way overblown since a powerful laser has to dwell before damage is done. There are research papers written of people (about to have their eye removed) staring into a laser for 20 minutes with no damage. I used to work with a Yag laser that was a couple 100 watts. That one you had to watch out for. Howie is one hell of a nice guy and his products are top notch. I have a 1.25" laser of his and it's dead square and has lasted several years now. I would buy any product from him without hesitation. I'd get the 2" personally unless you have a 1.25" focuser. Adding the reducer adds error, no matter how good it is. Of course, being careless is a terminal sin, and any of us who are should be banished for life ;) Phil

Mij, He caught Gary Honis. I know Gary from POLC and saw him last BFSP...he is ok but still goes to the eye dr. He was messing around with it...I didn't see it happen but I was there. His wife told him to cut it out and then it happened. Honestly, coming from a retailing family, I don't want to patronize someone who is that careless. If I get one sometime, I will buy from a more reputable dealer.

I got the 635nm, but I don't know that the 650nm wouldn't have been fine. I would get the 1.25" version. You will need a good 2" to 1.25" adapter, but you need this anyway as it is likely that your high-power eyepieces are 1.25". I didn't get his barlow, as I use my own. Finally, Howie is a great guy, supports many clubs and astro events, makes a great collimator, and stands by his products 110%. Dennis

I have no idea how well his stuff works but I wonder if other vendors have the same. Personally, I wouldn't take buy anything from the guy since he has no common sense at all. I still have not forgiven him for his "antics" at the Black Forest Star Party a few years ago when he inadvertantly lasered someone's eye especially since BFSP rules prohibited these Green Lasers.

How did he laser someone's eye? I hope that the pointer that he used was less than 5mw otherwise he may have done some real damage. Maybe the person that he lasered wanted to have Lasik. :-) "Ed" <ed1ward2@verizon.net > wrote in message news:1153775490.001645.149480@m79g2000cwm.googlegroups.com... > > I have no idea how well his stuff works but I wonder if other vendors > have the same. > Personally, I wouldn't take buy anything from the guy since he has no > common sense at all. > > I still have not forgiven him for his "antics" at the Black Forest Star > Party a few years ago when he inadvertantly lasered someone's eye > especially since BFSP rules prohibited these Green Lasers. >
