Okay, I've got a problem. For some reason, _anything_ that is posted here
by anyone does not show up. I am using Outlook Express to access this
group. After clicking on this newsgroup to download messages what has
started happening is this:

Either I am told that there are 0 messages, 0 unread. This even after O.E.
tells me that it has downloaded x number of messages.

Or (and this is after I tried unsubscribing then resubscribing as a possible
fix), I get told that there are 0 messages, -x (where x is some number)
unread.

The only thing I have done differently today is login from my laptop and
subscribe. Since that's an entirely different PC, I don't see how that
should affect anything.

I am not seeing this behavior with the other three newsgroups that I
subscribe to.

If anyone has any ideas, I'd appreciate it. Since I don't seem to be able
to see anything new here, please email.

Likewise email with comments on the thread I started about my declination
motor.

Thanks.

John--I would suggest you download and use Mozilla Thunderbird, as
Outlook Express and Internet Explorer are *not secure* products. Your
problem will likely go away in the process of switching to Thunderbird.

GOOD ADVICE (ESPECIALLY FOR MICROSOFT USERS)

o Make sure that your operating system is patched and up to
date. Do this every day that you use the computer.

o Make sure that your anti virus and anti spy ware software
is up to date. This is applicable for all Microsoft
computers. Do this every day that you use the computer.

o Scan for viruses every day the [Microsoft] computer is used.
Norton or McAfee are two possibilities.

o Scan for spyware every day the [Microsoft] computer is used.
There is good and horrible spyware out there--
This is the good stuff:
Ad-Aware (free)
Spybot Search and Destroy (free)
Spyware Blaster (free)
Spy Sweeper (commercial)
Pest Patrol (commercial)

o Avoid using Microsoft Outlook Express and Internet Explorer.
These two Microsoft applications have been, are now, and are
likely to remain security risks into the future... and because
the are bundled with the Microsoft Windows... the whole package
is at risk. Don't use them.

I am in total -- and then some -- agreement. I have been on the Fox and
Bird since just after they arrived. . .couldn't pay me to go back to the
Express or the Explorer.

Sam, I am in the middle of downloading Thunderbird even as I type this.
(I've got 60% of it acquired.)

I think I figured out the problem. (Well I must have, as I was able to see
your post.) I creating a pair of message rules earlier today to filter out
some of the crap that the latest round of morons had posted here. It
appears that without meaning to I instructed O.E. to delete _everything_,
which was obviously no good. I've deleted those rules, so now messages are
appearing for me.

I use Norton, I update it constantly, and scan my PC often. Nothing that I
download doesn't get scanned, even stuff from Monkeysoft. The stuff that is
out there is damn near impossible to root out anymore once it gets in, so I
am vigilant.

Anyway, thanks, Sam!

This is scaremongering bullshit advice.

There is no need to patch anything.

There is no need to use anti-virus or anti-spy software. Malware is
trivial to avoid with sensible precautions. Security software is for
morons.

Both can be secured without using third-party apps or installing new
software that is usually more difficult to use. For example, Gareth
Slee switched to the Mac last year, yet he is *still* looking for an
Outlook Express replacement because that is very user-friendly. In
addition, Firefox and other IE replacements do not work on certain
websites.

My security advice is this:

- Use a hardware firewall. Do NOT use software garbage like
ZoneAlarm.

- Turn-off ActiveX and place NASA, Google etc. in your trusted-sites
zone so that those cool Flash videos will run without restriction.

- Place OE in the restricted sites zone (Tools > Options > Security)

- Disable HTML in OE ( (Tools > Options > Read)

- Patches and Service Packs are a waste of bandwidth. Remember,
prevention is better than cure. Practise safe hex.

- Do NOT use anti-virus or anti-spyware - it slows down your machine
and such a cure is often worse than the disease. If you have a habit
of downloading porn from seedy websites as I do, be sure to use
reputable porn sites such as Bustybrits.com.

- If you're really paranoid, use a Mac. There are no viruses or
malware for Mac. Don't bother with Linux, because there is no decent
software for Linux.
