BTW - There is a pun in Latin involving the word MALLUS or MALUS with one l it means the evil thing with 2 ls it means apple. There is no mention of an apple in Genesis and the Hebrew text contains no puns. Sin is associated with a apple. I wonder if people are aware that that was a Latin pun. The EU uses the word "Mallus" in its labelling. I saw it when I bought an apple tree. That's right don't offend the French!

No, with a long A it means apple and with a short A it means evil. This vowel difference would not normally even show up in Latin spelling. There is no such word as MALLUS. There is > no mention of an apple in Genesis and the Hebrew text contains no puns. > Sin is associated with a apple. "Malus" is still the scientific name (not just in the EU) for the genus to which the apple tree belongs. If yours says "Mallus" you probably got sold a fake. Ross Clark

I have read that the Canaanite language was the original language of the Torah, but Hebrew is certainly closer to the source than Latin, which did not even exist as a language 3500 years ago. I have also heard that the "golden apples" of the Hesperides (a Greek legend closely cognate to the Eden narrative, down to the serpent Ladon) http://www.perseus.tufts.edu/Herakles/apples.html were also mistranslated. but from what I do not know. Doesn't look much like an apple tree to me... > > The EU uses the word "Mallus" in its labelling. I saw it when I bought > an apple tree. That's right don't offend the French! Maybe it is the Frech editorial on the German dessert 'apple strudel.' Probably why apple pie isn't considered a French delicacy, and doesn't even show up in their cookbooks.
