Space Weather News for . 25, 2006 http://spaceweather.com COMET OUTBURST: Astronomers report that Comet Swan has suddenly increased in brightness 4-fold, from magnitude +6 to +4.5. This makes it a naked-eye object in dark skies and a lovely sight through backyard telescopes. The cause of the outburst: A new vein of volatile ice may have opened up in the comet's nucleus. Solar heating transforms this freshly-exposed material into streams of bright, reflective gas and dust. Indeed, backyard telescopes seem to show new tendrils of gaseous material in the comet's long tail. Visit http://spaceweather.com for sky maps, images and more information.

Got a good look last night, though. > > > Visit http://spaceweather.com for sky maps, images and more information.

>From my ever increasing light polluted backyard, I thought at first I was viewing M13 with my old 7x50 binos. I checked the Sky 6 & sure enough there a nice double star close by. Went up a little, found M13 & couldn't believe how much brighter Comet Swan was in comparison to M13. I broke out the old C-90 Mak & saw it a bit better until the neighbors all put their spot lights on for putting the dog out, putting out trash, talking on the phone on their back porch........... The list goes on. But it's decent viewing in the 'burbs so it must be really great out away from the darkness slayers. Enjoy it now before it fades (or more neighbors put lights on). Be grateful they didnt start building an addition at that hour or their kid went nuts and shot 14 neighbors! > But it's decent viewing in the 'burbs so it must be > really great out away from the darkness slayers.
