I am considering buying a Sky Scout. I would appreciate feedback on the
Sky Scout.

Thanks.
Bruce

Use your Google connection to do a search on SkyScout in this newsgroup.
There was quite an informative thread about it a few weeks back.

There's been a lot of activity in the Yahoo "SkyScout" group since then
and two things have surfaced:

1. at least one batch is defective; the GPS receiver doesn't work

2. at least one firmware update, version 1.21.48, circa Sept. 5

Some people are claiming their units eats batteries. Mine went 2+
months
on the first set. My guess is yet another production run glitch where
the
GPS receiver isn't turned off after data acquisition (possibly due to a
bad
circuit trace), or possibly a wrong-valued resistor somewhere that's
drawing
more current than other units.

Other than the above, the SkyScout performs as advertised, and it's
really
handy locating alignment stars (for a GOTO mount) under partly or
mostly
cloudy skies when full constellations simply aren't visible -- it's
permitted me
to use some of my scopes on nights I otherwise would have not.

John,
I can't seem to find any discussion earlier than August.
Thanks.

While there were several discussions in the past year, beginning in
January, the first post from somebody who actually had one in hand, and
reviewed it, was by Mark Smith on July 19, followed by a usage review on
July 21. On August 13, Thad posted a link to his mini review at
http://thadlabs.com/ASTRO/SkyScout/ . I don't think there's been much
since.

That's the review I was thinking of.

Thanks, Chris, for the link and the specs. I didn't realize that there
was a Yahoo group. Any other good astronomy groups in Yahoo?
Happy Thanksgiving.
