Sure can, a reflector can be done by just about anyone, a good DOB would not
be hard at all.

Of course.

You can build a dobsonian mount with hand tools. You
can use commercial optics (excellent value nowadays),
or grind your own (total involvement). I've gone the
plywood-and-sonotube route myself with commercial
optics and delightful results. I hope to have a go at
grinding my own mirror some day.

Look for books by Richard Berry and Jean Texereau
for some of the classic references.

Take a look at http://www.stellafane.com/tm/index.html as a starting point.

I've done it twice. I used the book Publications

"The Dobsonian Telescope"
A Practical Manual for Building Large Aperture Telescopes by Dave
Kriege and Richard Berry.

It is a great read and you will know telescopes far better than you do
now. It will be worth its weight in gold as it will prevent you from
making many mistakes you may otherwise make. It will let you know the
proper order of things, as well as common pitfalls. It gives sources
of supplies as well. The Obsession web site offers many hard to find
parts as well.

My scopes are a 12.5" f/5 and a 22" f/4. I've made many upgrades to
the scope after it was finished. I know you'll feel at ease upgrading
as well as you built it. I've added a feathertouch focuser (great),
Argo Navis DSC, ServoCat GoTo system, and battery power. I still have
a list of upgrades I'd love to do. It may never be done?

somebody builds em - why can't you with an engineering degree!
Just dont bring in another enginner or you will be arguing 100
years from now on which screw to put in first.
