Over the weekend I finished reading _Parallax: The Race to Measure the Cosmos_ by Alan W. Hirshfeld. I found it in a used bookstore and picked it up because it looked the type of book I'd enjoy -- historical non-fiction built around a theme (like _Longitude_), but I'm a little surprised I haven't seen it before now. The book covers our attempts to measure the universe, from Hipparchus to Hipparcos, along with good explanations of the problems involved and how people attempted to overcome them, as well as giving some background into the lives of many of the players involved. I must say it was the most enjoyable book I've read in awhile. I would definitely recommend it for cloudy or rainy nights.
