Subject: Black dot on the sun
|
G'day all... Massive bushfires in the state of Victoria have given us guys down under a glimpse of the sun through the thick smoke haze that surrounds the City of Melbourne. The sun appears almost an orange red when seen through the smoke and just after dawn the colours are amazing. The question I'd like to put out to people is whether there is anything transiting the sun right now? >From here we see a black dot in the 9 to 12 O'clock quadrant, roughly near the centre. Can anyone tell me what this is? Cheers & thanks.

What will happen when the sunspot explodes (per spaceweather.com) re: "Will this beautiful spot explode again? Stay tuned." ?

Can anyone tell me what this is? Sounds like you are seeing a sunspot that is large enough to see without optical aid. There's a very large sunspot currently situated very near the center of the disk. http://nsosp.nso.edu/VIDEOIMG/isoon/latest_w.jpg Assuming the smoke around Melbourne continues, during the next week, watch the spot advance toward the limb due to the sun's rotation.
