Anyone own a copy of Binocular Astronomy by Craig Crossen and Will
Tirion?
I am considering buying this book.

Thanks.
Bruce

To date, I've only used binos for astro viewing. Those and this book
helped me along nicely from early stages to (what I'd term) "advanced
beginner" sky knowledge with a very nice tailoring to those using
binos. Recommended highly. The seasonal presentation of observing
that they adopted works well.

It is considered a recommended classic by most amateurs.

Although I rarely refer to it anymore, as a beginner this was one of my
favorites. It is one of the few astronomy books that contain chapters
that presents the night sky by seasonal galactic longitude. E.g. - in
the summer you look at the galactic core in Sge and the "winding"
portion of the galactic arms between Sge and Cyg; in winter you see the
galactic anticenter towards Orion; the spring and autumn present the
north and south galactic poles, respectively, and a relatively
unobstructed views of galaxies.

Hi Bruce,

I would also warmly recommend this book. One of its selling points is
that it also challenges the observer to try for objects that are not
suitable to telescopes, chiefly large dim nebulae. It works! I tried
it, and it makes for a very nice alternate observing list. Also
included is a "geography" of the milky way, i.e. what are we looking at
when staring at the Milky Way. Certainly one of the best astronomy
books I have (but I love nooks, so...)

Craig Crossen recently published a sort of updated version of this
book, called "Sky Vistas", which is also a splendid work, but rather
more expensive. You should find it easily on Amazon.

Cheers and clear skies from Switzerland (poorly served as of late)

Pierre
