Hi all, It's been a long time since I've posted here. Anyway, what eyepiece would you recommend for use in a 16" f/4.5 dob? I'm considering this list, but I'd rather not spend the $300 a Pan 35mm will cost me. Antares Erfles (but which one?) Vixen LVW 42mm (has to be 2nd-hand to meet my price point) Stratus 30mm Stratus 35mm Meade QX 30mm Meade QX 36mm TMB Paragon 40mm (a stretch at $249) SWAN ?? UWAN ?? (too costly) Televue Panoptic 35mm (again, too costly I think) I'd like to have decent stars to nearly the edge, where I'm mostly affected by coma inherent in my mirror. Perhaps at that point I'd buy a coma corrector to go with this eyepiece. Thanks for your opinions. John

Sent a e-mail to them to see if it's still available.

I have a 32mm TV plossl that works great in my f4.5 15" Not a wide apparent field of view like a Nagler, but a lot less expensive. Some coma near the edge, but a very enjoyable view. Shawn

My apologies for not getting that data to you. I have since converted to EF lenses. As far as the eyepiece, I would go with the Televue Panoptic 35mm. -Sam Wormley

The guy doesn't want a costly hand grenade to stuff his dob with. Anyway..these questions are usually pointless with soooo much on the market.

I woud recommend a 31mm Nagler (which is considerably above your price point) Failing a 31mm Nagler, I would recommend a 26mm Nagler, a 22mm Nagler or a 20mm Nagler.

He would ideally use a coma corrector which of course adds to the expense. Klamzon.

In that reflector, the stars are clean only in the center of the field, across perhaps a bit less than half the total diameter. At the edges they are pretty bad. But the same Stratus 21 looks fabulous in my f/10 C-11. So the eyepiece is not by any means an equivalent to a Nagler. Otherwise the 21 is wonderful and I use it with greatest pleasure, even in the f/4.7 scope. It seems to have, considering the large number of elements, very little loss of light. Eye relief is good. It's very well made. The filter threads are much better than the ones in any of my other Orion eyepieces. I am sorry that I did not snap up a 30 when it was available. AstroApp

Thanks to all for their replies (and good to hear from you Sam). Certainly the Panoptic or Nagler type must be worth the investment and I am considering it. As for the Stratus, I have a similar 21mm Hyperion that is excellent in my 16" f/4.5. I don't find coma much of an issue with it. I also have a 40mm Vixen 2" orthoscopic that provides adequate star images with across it's 32mm field stop. I don't find coma objectionable with this eyepiece either and that may be partially based on the low power (~ 40X). I see two issues with using the 40mm ortho: narrow AFOV and too large an exit pupil (10mm!). Hence my search for a better eyepiece. Anybody happy with the Celestron Axiom 40mm in a fast dob? I recently saw one of those on Astromart for a decent price. John

I have no issues with coma, though my scope if f/6. No Nagler or Panoptic, but very very nice for the price ($149). 20mm eye relief. Greg
