Newbie with Hardin 8" Dob, with painted wood base. I would like to keep the scope and base on front porch year around. Live in Illinois - all 4 seasons. Not sure I can do it but am looking for feedback/ideas. Also, how about BUDGET ideas for outside "observatory" enclosures? Thx. JDS -- Posted via a free Usenet account from http://www.teranews.com

Well, if your porch is an enclosed one and you can put a trap pr plastic sheeting up so no rain/snow will get inside, you might keep it out there. But that metal tube will not be easy to work with, you'd need to maybe put something on it to keep your hands from freezing to it. Now mine are outside 24/7/365, but I've got a tarp canape over then and am putting tarps on the sides and a big over over the top to keep rain out. -- The Lone Sidewalk Astronomer of Rosamond Telescope Buyers FAQ http://home.inreach.com/starlord Sidewalk Astronomy www.sidewalkastronomy.info The Church of Eternity http://home.inreach.com/starlord/church/Eternity.html "JDS" <jdslater_nospam@mchsi.com > wrote in message news:453a73c9$0$19656$88260bb3@free.teranews.com... > Newbie with Hardin 8" Dob, with painted wood base. Not sure I can do it but am looking for feedback/ideas. JDS: I have a friend with a 6-inch Dob (Celestron I believe) that is a 2nd or 3rd scope for him. We live in rural New York. He just leaves the 6" out under his deck with a big plastic bag over it. During the winter he shakes the snow off and carries the scope to where he's observing. He only uses this scope when he does not have time to set up one of his larger scopes. It's been out there for several years and seems to work OK. > Also, how about BUDGET ideas for outside "observatory" enclosures? A while back there was an article in one of the mags (S&T? Astronomy?) about a guy using one of those auto tent type "garages" as an observatory. It was on rails and after he opened the front "door" he then just rolled the entire unit from around the scope. Here in NY I see increasing numbers of these auto shelters being used so they must work in the snow and will probably last about 5 years or so. This type of unit would be too big for a 10-inch Dob, but perhaps you could make your own smaller one out of PVC pipe and plastic tarps. George N

I'd say the simplest would be getting an old refrigerator box, and putting a sheet of plastic dropcloth over the top. *I* have been working on plans for a geodesic dome for a shed/ but might work it to an observatory. hey starlord! remember me from RMR? I have my own property now so I can actually DO things. Muhahahahahaaaa!

Southern IL (Cairo) will have different observing conditions than Northern IL (Greater Chicago area).

not perm at all - but would like to leave out until i decide to move it. several snowfalls in northern Illinois each winter. combined with the easiest way to move/drag by dob/base too........
