For a 20cm sct, what would be a good barlow for splitting binaries? It would need to balance performance with economy, I can NOT afford a TeleVue. Terry

Optically it's very close to _anything_ on the market. <http://www.telescope.com/shopping/product/detailmain.jsp?itemID=253&itemType=PRODUCT&iMainCat=6&iSubCat=25&iProductID=253 > Peace, Rod Mollise Author of: Choosing and Using a Schmidt Cassegrain Telescope and The Urban Astronomer's Guide <http://skywatch.brainiac.com/astroland >

I picked up one of these "APOs" from Owl Services at a star party recently--I needed a new 3x and the price was right. Based on the limited amount of use I've been able to give it due to the weather, it works well, though I don't know that it's significantly better than the last crop of Chinese barlows, which worked pretty derned well too. Frankly, except for imaging, I don't use a barlow per se anymore. For visual use, I almost always use the Denkmeier Power Switch now. Here's the text from the web page: Ultrascopic™ 2x 3-Element Barlow, 1.25" With 27mm of clear aperture, this “long” barlow (5-5/8") from Japan will please even the most demanding observer. Fits 1.25" focusers or diagonals. They say the "Shorty" is also from Japan. Shawn

The only bad barlows are the cheap ones that come with department store telescopes. I do have an old Edmund barlow (not the Dakin) that wasn't much good. Bud

This little trick also works with imagers and film. --- Dave
