Subject: Astro tour company gone silent

Anybody know what's happened to
AstronomicalTours LLC? Their e-mail
server is broken, they don't answer
the phone, and their Web site
http://www.astronomicaltours.net
hasn't been updated in months.
Their last expedition was supposed
to have ended on July 31.

Sounds like they are out of business, what with the rise in gas prices
I'm not
surprised and that's sad. Stellafane had a drop in attendance this
year from what
I've heard and I don't doub't that there will be many other Star
Parties that have the same
problem.

I work in the area of consumer affairs - astronomy related companies
and organisations seem to the target of far more complaints that you
would expect given the economic size of the sector.

You've said that twice now on separate threads, but I find it very
difficult to believe.

Interesting...but the company in question, Astronomical Tours LLC,
seemed to be pretty solid. You can find mention of them in eclipse
newsletters, etc. We were planning to go on their Africa eclipse tour
this year, but my wife got sick. Until that happened I had been
exchanging e-mail with them and talked to Jen Winter on the phone. I
couldn't help but wonder how an informal mom-and-pop organization
located in Missouri could produce profitably all those far-flung tours,
but I never doubted the company's legitimacy. I'm more inclined at this
point to think that they were struck by some non-financial disaster.

It may also explain the lack of a reply to an email I sent them a few
weeks ago in relation to the total solar eclipse for 2008.

I have the data to hand - astronomy related companies and organisations
rate in the top 15th percentile when the total number of complaints and
the economic size of the sector are taken into account.

In Canada? Sorry, but I'd have to actually see the data.
