http://members.csolutions.net/fisherka/astronote/astromath/spfp/SolPnLatCalc.html This is to announce an experimental online calculator to estimate the solar or planetcentric geographic longitude and latitude of features like sunspots or craters. It is intended to be used by amateurs with solar sketches or astrophotos how want to estimate the latitude and longitude of uncertain features for later lookup in a gazetter. At best, the calculator has a low precision of around 0-10 degrees. Amateur literature on the Carrington's method for determining the position of sunspots is listed. Known alternatives are primarily mechnical disks for the sunspots, available through the Stanford Solar Center - http://solar-center.stanford.edu/solar-images/latlong.html and overlays prepared using the USNO "Apparent Disk of Solar System Object" online generator. The USNO generator creates a synthetic image of a planet with a lat and long grid overlain on the image. http://aa.usno.navy.mil/data/docs/diskmap.html Again, this is an alpha experimental version. Donot expect too much out of it. Maybe my first effort will inspire a programmer with more skill to give it a go with a better version. - Canopus56
