Subject: About the latest Cartes du Ciel FITS images

Rod of the Mollisses stated today in an earlier post: "The beta (3.0)
doesn't have DSS downloads implemented yet."

This is obviously correct and I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for this
option to ever be added. The available FITS images (of which there are
9,854) are very nice and in my opinion add to the overall completeness and
elegance of Cartes du Ciel. I suppose that if I want DSS download
capability then LEDAS (http://ledas-www.star.le.ac.uk/DSSimage/) will
remain my weapon of choice.

There doesn't seem to be anywhere on the internet which shows just how well
the FITS images integrate with CDC so I have put a couple of screenshots up
on The Astro Post to aid you in deciding if the fairly hefty download is
for you. Go to: www.theastropost.com and click on the page "This And That"
to view a screenshot of NGC 7000 plus FITS images found in the region
around Antares.

Should you like what you see then you can have it all for free. Go to:
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=64092 to get the
latest beta version of CDC and the "Pictures" download. Load them into
your existing CDC 2.76 directory and the new program will inherit
previously downloaded star catalogs.

Once you have the latest version of CDC downloaded along with the FITS
images, you will need to activate those pictures. To do so, click on
"Setup" at the top of the screen and then click "Configuration." This will
produce a box which offers a "Pictures" option in the left tab. Click that
and then click "Scan Directory." The proper location will then come up.
Now, all that is left to do is to check the box "Show object pictures on
chart."

I hope the above helps those who seek this valuable option.

Ooops...fat fingers push "send" when not ready. ;-)

HI Martin:

That's ONE "s"! :-)

I'm pretty sure Patrick will implement the download of DSS images soon.
This is a freeware program, however, so we can't be too miffed if
"soon" means "don't hold your breath." :-)

CdC is wonderful, and 2.76 still works just as well as it ever did, if
it doesn't look quite as up to date or pretty as it once did.

You're quite right, though; there are alternatives. Much of the time I
just use The Sky 6 now, which has pretty good built-in images.
