If every regular contributor put "astro" as the first word of their
subject one could sort the list of posts by subject and have the
legitimate posts appear at the top. No? Is the person who is conducting
this attack watching the group so that they would notice this and
defeat it?

It would stop the current problem, and would massively reduce the long
term problems. This is done on the alt.binaries.pictures.astro group, and
they still get spam, but the amount that correctly has the header (and is
therefore 'seen' by people who set their email client up to remove posts
if they don't have this), is _tiny_. Most of these posts are 'robotic',
and checking by the people(?...) involved is minimal.
Several other groups (including in some cases, ones that require a
'login'), are being hit, in various fields. I'm afraid it is probably
caused by the school holidays... :-(

Best Wishes

although it is quite coincidental this has happened just as a
moderated saa forum has opened. Very curious I think.

Not only /quite/ coincidental; /entirely/ coincidental. Mr. Howell is
not responsible for this sporge attack.

Not sure that would help. The spammers seem to reply to everything.
