I miss it more than the other 100-odd SCTs I've owned. Especially its
cast aluminum fork arms.

I'll have to admit that a telescope like that sounds to me almost like
the ideal telescope. A touch larger than 8" for even better views of
Mars and Saturn... but not so large as to be as expensive or bulky as a
10" or 11" telescope.

But for driving out in the country for deep-sky, nothing beats a Dob -
and others with different viewing ambitions may well be served by a
high-quality but small aperture refractor. No one kind of telescope is
best for everyone, but this does sound to me like a "sweet spot" for
many.

I parted with my Ultima because I eventually grew to dislike the wedge and
fork arrangement.

Pros:
imaging most of the sky, and through the meridian without a flip

Cons:
1) Equatorial mounts and binoviewers don't get along well
2) Observing near the celestial pole is a pain in the neck
3) Needing a clear shot of the Pole, just to look at some DSO's on a
weeknight

Basically I started out really loving my Ultima 8-PEC as it was my first
large scope, and I did my first imaging with it. But, as I said, I
eventually grew to dislike the wedge/fork arrangment (for visual use).

That was when I got my first Dob. Now I don't have a Dob, I have a small
reflector on a GEM, and want a Dob. Go figure.

It may not be convenient, but if there's some special need to view the
polar area, you could always mount the scope as alt-az. Or even turn
the whole thing around. Of course, tracking is out the window then.

Indeed. If I had some free cash, I'd have an SCT on GoTo in altazimuth fork
with appropriate dew shielding. C11, binoviewer w/starsweeper, in a small
shed with roll off roof, just for casual ubzervin on any given night.

In the meantime, I'm using the GEM w/6"F5 now and again, and saving up for
another 12" Dob, which I never shoulda sold.

But, I got a few years to retirement.... and a plan that includes it all.
