What is this SPORGE flood and who is causing it? What can be done to make it
stop so that this newsgroup will return to normal?

Basically, nothing. Unmoderated groups are vulnerable to this kind
of thing. I mentioned creating a sci.astro.amateur.moderated a
while back that would be less suseptible to this kind of thing but
the general consensus seems to be against that.

Sporge flooding of sci.space will commence in a few hours.

This will render sci.space useless. For an example, see Sci.Crypt.
