I just found out online that Wally Schirra, one of the Original Seven
Mercury Astronauts, passed away today in California.

Of the Original Seven, Only Scott Carpenter and John Glenn are left.

Godspeed Wally.

Certainly looks that way. AP, Reuters, NY Times all
report his death early Thursday. Reuter's source was

Your dream should not be harmed but Wally was a great man doing a
great job. Will be missed. Don't worry about a dream -- when you get
too old to remember it -- then worry. :)

Very good points by all. The late 50's on up through the 60's were an
incredible time for feeding dreams. History, technology, and the best
of the human spirit to explore all fell into place. A lot of us ...
um... middle aged guys are posting in this group because of it.

for me the 60's was nothing more that the changing of schools everytime my
folks moved to a new house and to a new city and then in 1966 I got my dad
to sign the papers and I went into the army. so no big deal in my book about
the 60's.

Quote from Michael Griffin

"It was impossible to know Wally, even to meet him, without
realizing at once that he was a man who relished the lighter
side of life, the puns and jokes and pranks that can enliven
a gathering. But this was a distraction from the true nature
of the man. His record as a pioneering space pilot shows the
real stuff of which he was made. We who have inherited today's
space program will always be in his debt."

Another reminder of what childhhood dreams were made of in the 60's
is gone. What a special time that was indeed.

I remember Monsignor Curry at St. Joseph's RC Church in Oradell, NJ
announcing Shirra was going to be the guest speaker at the K of C
dinner/dance. :)
