The Perseid meteor shower has begun. Although the display will not peak until August 12th and 13th, sky watchers are
already counting as many as a dozen meteors per hour (including some nice fireballs) during the darkest hours before
dawn. Rates could increase 5- to 10-fold when the shower reaches maximum on Sunday night and Monday morning. Advice:
Get away from city lights. While many Perseids will be bright enough to see from light-polluted urban areas, the
shower's full grandeur is reserved for places with dark and starry skies. This is a good weekend to go camping.

Visit http://Spaceweather.com for photos, observing tips and a sky map. Full coverage of the shower begins today and
will continue until Perseid activity subsides.

Yes, I have been out recently, including last night, and have seen
meteors coming in at perhaps one every minute or two, 10-10:30pm CST.
Nice clearn skies. Duluth (northern) Minnesota USA. Going out Sunday
the 12th to try and catch it at a peak, hopefully see lots more.

I was out last night for about 15 minutes, (Sat - Sun) as saw maybe a
half a dozen. Not bad for "the previous night."

My wife and I got up at 4AM PDST Sunday for a look. We saw 30 meteors
in 50 minutes. We'll try again tomorrow morning about the same time.

We can see about half the sky, from east through south to west, but
almost nothing north of the zenith due to the many tall trees beyond
our property line. (We're in pine and redwood country.)

Sorry about that. Gualala is on the Mendocino County coast in California.

I'm in west-central Iowa... CLOUDY now, (Sunday 10:22 pm,) just had a
thunderstorm roll through. With a huge amount of luck, maybe it'll
clear. At least it cooled things off. Only 66 degrees now.

As Sunday morning, my wife and I went out at 4:05 PDST Monday. By
4:55 we had seen 76 Perseids, many more than Sunday morning. We
stayed a little longer to make it a full hour, although the sky was
definitely brighter by then. Our 60-minute total was 87 Perseids and
2 other meteors. It was a very nice sky-show.
