I recently purchased a Canon Digital Rebel XT. I'm considering to do
some prime focus astrophotography with my Celetron 8. The Celetron 8
is about 30 years old.

My question is: Is there a different T-Ring for the Canon Digital
Rebel SLR camera and the film version Canon Rebel or will the same T-
Ring work. I have to a buy a T-ring and I don't want to buy the wrong
one.

Chris:

I think that we are on the same page. Your "EOS to T-Adapter" is what
I am calling the T-Ring (item on left in the first image) and that
this part is camera specific.Your SCT to T-adapter" i(item on right in
first image) s what I called the T-adapter and this isn't camera
specificbut must be able to attach to the telescope at one end and the
"T-ring" at the other end.

Chris:

To be perfectly clear, I understand that the T-Ring must be Can EOS
specific. The T-ring attaches to the camera. The adapter attaches to
the back end of the telescope and the T-ring. My first thought was
that a T-adapter was a T-adaptor and not dependent on the camera type
since it doesn't connect directly to the camera.

Based on the last sentence in your original response, my think may be
wrong. Please advise.

Thanks.

Hi Larry-

The T-ring system is a standardized adapter design. It basically
specifies a threaded connection. By using a device-specific adapter at
each end (that is, the telescope and the camera) it is possible to use
standardized connectors, spacers, etc between them.

The part you are actually looking for is an adapter from an EOS bayonet
to a T-thread. Once you have that, there are several options for
connecting the camera to the telescope. One method is to use a
T-threaded 1.25" or 2" adapter that you can place directly into the
eyepiece holder. I don't care for that approach since there's often
play, the camera focal plane may not be perpendicular to the optical
axis, and it's easy for the camera to fall out. What I use is two T-ring
components: an EOS-to-T adapter for my camera, and an SCT-to-T adapter
for my scope. The latter has SCT threads on one side, and ends in a
short tube with T-threads on the other. That screws into the camera
adapter, and provides a solidly threaded mounting system.

Here are a couple of images of what the components look like:

They are both EOS, the mount will be the same.

They are both the basic EOS bayonet. The adapter is the same for both
the film and digital Rebels. Just make sure that "EOS" is specified,
since there are adapters for older style Canon mounts as well.
