I tried to track down a comet I just heard about (Comet C/2006 VZ13 Linear) in Starry Night Pro, v.4.5.2, but it didn't seem to have it in its database. That's despite using the "Update Comets/Asteroids/ Satellites" command. I've noticed this before with Starry Night Pro, where it simply doesn't seem to be up to date with the current sky, particularly pertaining to comets. Anyone else have this experience? Am I missing some kind of update procedure, or are the software authors simply not keeping it as current as it should be? Is there a better product for the Mac? Thanks. -Fleemo

I forget which comet it was but no matter how many updates I ran, the comet I wanted would not show up. I e-mailed them and in a day or so they replied that the next update would contain the comet and, sure enough, a day later I updated and there it was. Maybe we need to e-mail them and ask them to include it.

I had no problem with that comet in SNP. It came down with the downloads, and was right there. In fact, I used SNP to drive my scope right to the comet.

I wish I could get SNP to drive my Dob but it just won't do it.

There was an additional setting that restricted the number of download lines to 1000 comets. There are now so many known comets in the MPC datafiles, that to get the recently added comets you have to download more than 1000 lines. In Cartes du Ciel, I had to reset my number of download lines to 2000 or 3000. Then the program captures the most recent comets. Perhaps there is a similar setting in Starry Night Pro? - Canopus56

The easiest way to find a comet or asteroid is to use RTGUI, the free Real-Time Astronomy Software for Windows. Instead of trying to download the parameters for hundreds or thousands of objects, it downloads positions for one object at a time. You tell it what object you want to observe, it goes and gets the positions for that object (and only that one). Let's face it, most amateurs only see two or three comets a year (if even that many). Having to deal with hundreds or thousands of asteroids and comets you'll never see is like looking for a needle in a haystack. Just click on the "Get Comet/Asteroid" button, then enter the name C/2006 VZ13 , and click "OK". You'll get hourly positions for that object for the next 60 days. If you have a Goto scope, just click on the "Goto" button to be taken right there. If you have Cartes du Ciel (Skycharts) installed, it'll show you just where the object is. Make sure to download the latest RTGUI version (8.1) so you'll have these features. http://www.rtgui.com Robert Sheaffer canopus56 wrote: > On Jul 14, 4:37 pm, fleem...@comcast.net wrote: > > I tried to track down a comet I just heard about (Comet C/2006 VZ13 > > Linear) in Starry Night Pro, v.4.5.2, but it didn't seem to have it in > > its database.
