From what I've been able to find out, Dennis suffered a stroke
at the beginning of the week. Don't have a lot of details as the
place he is staying at won't give out patient info, which I can
understand. However, he is able to speak and is progressing
towards getting better.

Contact info:

Antelope Valley Convalescent
44445 15th Street West
Lancaster, CA 93534
661-948-7501

Trailer Park manager: 661-256-1347

I'm sure that Dennis would really appreciate getting some cards
or calls to liven up his life and let him know that his "Internet family"
is concerned about him.

I called that number just now, and he just started taking his nap. He
was supposed to have therapy later. I let them know I was a friend
who wanted to know how he was doing, that was all they could tell me,
understandably.

I called the landlord previously, left a message on their answering
machine. It would be great to set up a fund for him, or how to go
about it, if someone lived there not far from Dennis. I wouldn't mind
sending a donation, but would want it to get to him. If I knew his
landlord was feeding Dennis's cats it would be great to be able to
send a donation to perhaps the SPCA or Hope for Animals if they could
continue to care for his cats, I'm sure he'd appreciate that. I'm in
Louisiana, but would be glad to help.

Well, I called the number at Antelope Valley Convalescent and got a
recording...

So I told them (on the recording) who I was, and asked them if he has a
phone I can talk to him on, and asked them to call me back with an answer...

I'm not betting on a response, but I WILL return any call I get...

If they fail to call me back, or if they DO, and I talk to Dennis, I'll let
the group know what's happening... If they DON'T call back, I'll try
again... I urge others to do the same... I'm SURE Dennis will be happy to
hear from all his friends. Trolls need not apply...

If you do manage to speak to Dennis, please express my sincerest wishes
for a very speedy recovery.

Called them again, with the same (no) result... Just a recording with no
one to talk to. I left a message the FIRST time, but at this point, I'm not
confident there is really anyone listening at the other end, as is often the
case in adult health care...

This afternoon I had a phone call from someone else who has been following
Dennis' problems...

Unfortunately, my limited random access memory didn't record who the caller
was, but he's apparently in close contact with the situation on a daily
basis...

It sounds like Dennis is doing reasonably well, and that his cats are being
taken care of...

Apparently, he's been moved from the previous convalescent home to Antelope
Valley Health Care.

Unfortunately, I don't have a phone number (though the phone number for the
convalescent home only returned a recording for me) for them...

Hopefully Dennis will make a good recovery, and, in due time, we will be
hearing from him again...

It would probably help if you took a little time to read the other messages
in this, and the other related thread...

Dennis has had a stroke, and is in a convalescent care center for recovery.

Subject: Re: Starlord update
Jan,

The issue that I am having is an reinjury to my back that has severely
limited my observing sessions. I have a 10 inch teleport that weighs about
32 pounds and my last injury was from improperly lifting this little scope!
I am now able to properly lift the scope very carefully and put it on and
remove it from the passenger seat of my car. The problem is that sometimes
when I get to an observing site, I need to carry the scope from my car. I
know that StarLord uses a RadioFlyer Wagon and I thought that may be a good
solution for me. I did some research and found that the RadioFlyer Wagons
also weigh about 35 pounds! That would double the weight capacity that I
have to deal with and really isn't acceptable. I am wondering if there are
any lighter wagons that I could use to transport my scope and was wondering
if StarLord found a wagon that is lighter. If not, I will most likely sell
my scope and go back to observing with my 4 inch refractor, but even that is
a problem to lug to some observing sites.

I have thought about using a small hand-truck (a.k.a. "dolly") but they
could damage the primary collimation adjustment on the bottom of the dob's
primary mirror.

Thanks for any ideas that you may have...

(Does anyone know of a carbon-fiber wagon? Do they make such a thing?)

I have five consecutive damaged discs in my lower back, and lifting is an
issue for me, too...

I have already gotten rid of my larger scopes, but still have a heavy 13"
scope, and a 12" Meade LightBridge that I bought to reduce the weight over
the 13" by about 40 pounds (I will soon get around to selling the 13"). I
use a hand truck for those scopes, as I did for the larger ones... It makes
moving the scopes around child's play, although the round base of the
LightBridge complicates things a little... I secure the scopes to the hand
truck with a nylon strap which has a ratcheting device to pull and hold the
strap snugly around the scope to avoid ugly problems if the hand truck
should lean a bit in the process of negotiating steps or uneven surfaces...

There's a photo of the hand truck under my 13" in the Webshots album via the
link below my signature. It's under Jan's Scopes, when you get to the
albums...

The luggage cart that Dennis Woos suggested might be an even better solution
for you, given the relatively light weight of your scope...

What about a luggage cart, e.g.
http://www.amazon.com/SPR01753/dp/B0006HVJQQ/ref=pd_sbs_a_1/002-4271381-5925631

Looking at a picture of your scope, it looks like the accessory drawer is
below the mirror/cell when folded up, so I don't see how it is in danger.
Also, you can always get a lighter scope.

Hi Dennis,

Thanks for the recommendation regarding the luggage cart. It may just work
and the price is not too bad. As for getting a lighter scope, that is a good
idea. I want a scope that gathers mode light! :-) Seriously, the Teleport is
a 32 pound 10 inch self-contained dob that is lighter (weight-wise) than
most 6 inch dobs and therefore I am really hoping that I don't have to sell
my dob. The Teleport 10 is a great planetary scope and a good compromise for
a deep sky scope. Thanks again for the recommendation.

Although not not good news at least not as bad as my premonition
of what had happened.
Hopefully he'll have a rapid and complete recovery.

In the absence of any other info, it may be safe to assume that a
neighbor discovered him and called 911 or whatever and that's how he
ended up in the hospital. If that happened, surely the neighbors
would look after his cats -- on the other hand, from time to time he
has described a couple of his neighbors as real assholes.

I searched the Internet for Rosamond, CA and saw references to some
sort of cat rescue group there. I think I'll send them an e-mail --
if I can find them again.

I spoke to a helpful man at the Antelope Valley Health Care Centre, who
confirmed that Dennis is there, that he hasn't a phone so I couldn't phone
him. He couldn't tell me how long Dennis will be there, but he did assure me
that he would pass on my best wishes. He said some other people had called,
from Florida, amongst other places. I will send a card to the hospital,
hoping that Dennis is back home before it arrives.

The facilities name you gave is apparently more recent than the one from
I got from the Lancaster, CA city website. Had the same address and
phone # . I tried doing searches for * Antelope Valley Health Care Centre*
but got no hits.

The park manager said he was; however, given the "friendly"
relationship they've had , one can only guess.

Thanks!

While Dennis and the park manager have had their ups and downs, it'd be hard
to imagine someone knowingly letting pets starve (and if they did, they
should be prosecuted)...

So hopefully they're in at least reasonably safe hands...

HOPEFULLY...

Whether this guy knows about details like cleaning out cat litter boxes,
etc, is worrisome, but from here, it's a bit distant to be able to DO
anything about, as sad as it sounds...
