What's with alt.astronomy.solar? I used it a modest amount a few years back
and about 1/2 of the messages were just spam. I thought I'd look again, and
it's either worse or the same. I know that moderation of NGs is often
minimal, but I would think someone would want to clean it up a bit. There
are a few NGs that really do get moderated.

It never has been all that active or free from off-topic material, troll
bait, and spam. If you want something having to do with solar
observing, you might check out the solar forum on Cloudynights.com The
Cloudynights forums are topical and all moderated, so you don't have to
wade through all the garbage you often have to do on USENET groups.
Clear skies to you.

A plus for NGs is they do not require passwords and userids. That's not
much, but I sometimes appreciate it.

However, I don't understand why the creator of a NG like the solar one
doesn't just yank it.

I'd say they are somewhat OVER-moderated...

I would say not. The noise level on those forums is pleasantly low, and
attempts at flame wars or diversion well off-topic are quickly doused,
which is the main reason for the moderation in the first place. Clear
skies to you.

These days, newsgroups need to be very broad interest to attract much
traffic (like SAA). I think the vast majority of focused groups are
using list servers, Yahoo groups, or web-based forums. I'll bet if you
look around you'll find some excellent solar observing resources.
