Since we're looking back a bit in time, I really miss Rich Whalen, and his contributions here... Hope he's alive and well, but have heard NOTHING anywhere on ANY of the groups I belong to about him... I used to have his e-mail address, but multiple ISP changes seem to have taken their toll on THAT, so I can't just SEND him something... Anyone know anything??? -- Jan Owen To reach me directly, remove the Z, if one appears in my e-mail address... Latitude: 33.6 Longitude: -112.3 http://community.webshots.com/user/janowen21

And after the surgery healed fully, he officially blessed my returning to long range big bore shooting, and said that both of my eyes appeared quite capable of coping with the recoil without reservations... But, after THAT experience, I've been pretty tentative about DOING any more of it, at least not with the long range, full power stuff... Still have the hardware, though... That detached retina was NOT a fun experience, and I was VERY lucky to have figured out what the problem was as quickly as I did (believe it or not, I went into my computer and figured out the problem by looking up the symptoms via the Internet), or they might not have been able to save my vision in that eye... And, after evaluating my priorities, I decided I preferred looking at the wonders of the night sky to poking big holes in pieces of paper 3000 feet away... Yes. Rat's back, too... He's been posting fairly regularly again for at least the last month or so... Starting to feel like down HOME again... While one can never *go back* and relive the "good old days", maybe there's a chance to create a NEW good old days into the future, if folks hang in there... -- Jan Owen To reach me directly, remove the Z, if one appears in my e-mail address... Hi Roland, Same back at you, hows business ? Still Slammed? Was looking on your websit yesterday, that one picture of M42 might be the best I've seen! (pro or amatuer). You still making any Mak's? or too much trouble? First time I google my name and your message pops up! I'm fine, have not been on any astronomy forums for several years, got tired of all the flaming etc.Gives me more time to observe :-) Still in Florida, still observing using various scopes, still have the 8" F16 TEC Mak. I've also got a few more new hobbies for cloudy nights, one being Ham radio. Unfortunately my vision is not what it used to be, it's gone from 10/15 to around 20/30 with my right (observing eye) the worse. Also I've been doing a lot of traveling, also building a cabin in NM at 7000' surrounded by National Forest. Pretty good observing spot. Was at TSP in 2005, observed clouds every night :-( That was the last "big" star party I've been to. Other than that been raising dogs, working etc. Is this group any more civil than it used to be? I do miss a lot of you guys; we had some good conversations. Hope all is well with you and Rod, maybe I'll start checking in once in a while :-) Hope this reaches you, they seem to be having problems with Sci astro's servers. Richard Whalen

It's GREAT to hear from you again!!! Sounds like you are experiencing many of the same things we all do over our lives; change... I'm still in the same area, though I've moved out of Phoenix about 20 miles to the northwest. The Phoenix light pollution dome is still huge at this distance, and we're on the edge of it, but skies ARE quite a bit darker out here... Nearly as good as where we USED to live, when we first built THERE... I understand the eye problems, too... I had a detached retina in my right (observing) eye about four or so years ago... Nearly lost the sight in that eye, but the surgery went very well, and things returned pretty much to normal, but then the cataracts began, and the right eye, apparently because of the surgery, has grown faster than the left one... So, now, the eyesight gets a little worse with every passing year... When I have the surgery, my ophthalmologist me I should get pretty much ALL my vision back with the new lenses, but, of course, as I age further, that'll begin to go downhill, too!!! This has changed my perspective on my neverending search for perfect telescope optics (never got QUITE as lucky as you, with that TEC Mak, though I still lust after something along those lines)... HAVING a perfect scope may be soothing to the soul, but if your eyes aren't good enough to SEE the difference, it's something of a moot point, so I've been considering setting my sights just a LITTLE lower, and maybe buying a couple more smaller scopes (my back, you know - it's getting older and worse, too)... Yes, this is still SAA... With many of the same folks... Good folks and crackpots, both... Not QUITE as much flaming these days, though... Quite... But, after a "sporge" attack, recently, the group has seemed to rally somewhat, and the bad stuff has been somewhat muted, while we've begun to hear from a number of the old regulars who've been gone, or have been just lurking... Almost like a reunion... And THAT's been GREAT!!! Welcome HOME!!! Hope to see you here again soon!!! My current scopes and *some* of my other interests are in my Webshots albums via the link in my signature section below... -- Jan Owen To reach me directly, remove the Z, if one appears in my e-mail address...
