I'm not much of a meteor shower observer, but I've been too busy
lately to haul out the telescopes, so last Sunday night (08/12/07, I
believe), I set up a lawn chair in the back yard and had a watch
around 1:20 in the morning.

I counted 17 meteors in 20 minutes, it was actually pretty fun. Three
of them turned out to be very bright and striking. On the other hand,
others were faint streaks that would had been washed out by the least
amount of moonlight. Delicate evanescent streaks, that had I not
observed them, may not have been known to exist at all.

The backyard observing site is still doing OK. I estimate about mag 6
still at the zenith, but the circle of dark sky is slowly receding
over the years. I've got jerk neighbors that refuse to turn out their
lights with any consistency, so observing DSO's in peace is hit or
miss. Just the same as long as I put my back to the lights the views
are still pretty damned good.

This particular night, all the lights were off, the evening, at 7000
ft was mild, the crickets were rancorous, and the event was deeply
fulfilling if, too short. The meteors lulled me, I quickly became
drowzy and it was time to hit the sack.

I really love communing with the night sky.

Hi Gladys, from whence do you hail, that the weather is recently so
inopportune for celestial observing?

Judging from the domain, wildhogs.org, I would say Belize.

Great report that gives a real picture of how it all was for you, Rat. I
like that kind of colorful, sensual, descriptive writing.
