Subject: Planetarium programs club month sky calendars
The publicity coordinator in my club would like to produce a monthly
local sky chart similar to the types seen in S&T. Is there a
planetarium program that will produce similar basic labeled horizon
views but that _does not have copyright republication_ restrictions? -

You can use TheSky for this (although it may be overkill if that's all
you want to do).

TheSky (and some other apps) has a formal notice giving permission to
use its charts as long as a copyright notice is attached. However, there
was a recent court decision (can't find the reference right now)
involving a mapping program that invalidated the right of a software
publisher to claim a copyright on the generated map. That likely means
that you are free to use any planetarium program and generate your own
charts without legal restriction... although you may not want to get
involved in a legal hassle defending that right.

Thanks, Greg. Specifically, we were thinking of sprucing up our press
releases for bi-weekly star parties by including member images and
adding a horizon chart. The newspapers like the local
astrophotographs. Although the club's a 501(c)(3), the charts would
be republished in our local newspapers. Is that within the scope of
use that you would be willing to allow, with attribution of course.

Certainly!

Thanks Rod. I didn't see that Chevalley had a republication disclaimer
in Cartes for chart output by other than for purely individual non-
commercial use. I'll have to give the documentation another read.
Since posting, I have also found John Walker's HomePlanet v3.0, the
desktop version of his YourSky online planetarium, which
unquestionably has no copyright implications. This seems to be the
"root" of most published sky charts that I have seen online and can be
teased to produce charts similar to those put out by planetariums for
monthly calendars.

Yes.

A free program that will do this is Cartes du Ciel, and the author
allows free use of the program output (as do the authors of most other
programs). It would be nice to email him, however.

A for-pay app that does fantastic charts, including all sky charts, is
Greg Crinklaw's SkyTools. Like CdC's Patrick Chevalley, I believe Greg
allows free use of his program's output. As with Patrick, though, it
would be nice if you'd email Greg first.

That and a calendar of events as well. Just for the record, I don't
retain any control over the information produced via SkyTools. It is my
hope that it be useful for club newsletters. Attribution is appreciated
of course.
